Dear OLLI Members,
Our Summer 2014 catalog has been posted online (click here to read the catalog). We have another engaging lineup of College for Seniors courses and other special events and activities. We know that you will be busy throughout the summer with gardens, travel, visits from friends and family, and the opportunities to enjoy all that Western North Carolina has to offer.  We hope, however, that you will make time to enjoy a course, workshop or event right here at the Reuter Center.

We will send out complete details about registration next Sunday for our Summer 2014 registration that will take place on Tuesday, May 20, beginning in the early morning.

Don't forget that we also have openings in our life transition programs The Gift of Time and Exploring Continuing Care Retirement Communities (see more information in this newsletter) and our Workshops that begin this month.  You may register for these programs any time. We are also taking registrations for our Leadership Asheville Seniors program that takes place this fall (Wednesdays, September 10 - November 5, 2014).

Jim Lenburg, the OLLI Steering Council chair, and I recently returned from the OLLI National Conference.  We had a chance to learn from our colleagues from across the country, but we also came home very proud of the many things that we have accomplished over the 25 years of our history and that we continue to accomplish every day in our various programs. The final keynote speaker for the conference, Dr. Margaret Chesney, director for the Osher Center for Integrative Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, noted that the seven dimensions of wellness (physical, intellectual, emotional, social, spiritual, environmental, and occupational) are promoted and served by programs like OLLI that lead to successful aging. Many thanks to various ways that all of you contribute to the longevity and success of our program for creative and enthusiastic retirement and the ways that you model and promote thriving in life's second half.

With gratitude,
Catherine Frank
Executive Director

Proton Therapy:

A New Radiotherapy Treatment Lecture

by Bradlee Robbert
Wednesday, May 14, 11:30 am - 1:30 pm
Reuter Center's Manheimer Room,
free and open to the public

Radiation therapy has been around nearly 100 years, but traditional radiation therapy utilizes x-rays.  An x-ray has no weight and travels at the speed of light.  Now there is proton

therapy, which is particle therapy.  The advantage of particle or proton therapy is that this subatomic particle can be accelerated or slowed down to stop the radiation dose inside the human body.

Robbert will present some of the past, present and future possibilities of the future of radiation oncology specifically highlighting proton therapy and will show actual treatment plans and compare them to traditional radiation therapy.

Bradlee Robbert, Director of Patient Services at the University of Florida Proton Therapy Institute, is a licensed radiation therapist with a bachelor's in healthcare administration and nearly fifteen years of medical experience, ten of those in radiation oncology.
