Dear OLLI Members,
If you missed the Reuter Center Singers (RCS) in performance last night, you will have one more chance to enjoy their renditions of the music of the Rat Pack (Sammy Davis, Jr., Dean Martin, and Frank Sinatra), today, Sunday, May 4, 4 pm in the Manheimer Room at the Reuter Center. Please remember that the concert is free, but that donations are welcome. Thanks to RCS director Chuck Taft and all of the singers for the vitality and joy they bring to their performances.
OLLI Steering Council chair Jim Lenburg and I returned on Thursday from the OLLI National Conference, held this year in Carlsbad, California. These meetings offer an opportunity to learn from other OLLIs, to share best practices, and to meet with other people who want to foster stimulating and enriching environments for lifelong learning. We heard from many people who are excited to attend the Southern Regional Lifelong Learning Meeting that we will be holding here in Asheville July 30 - August 1. Both Jim and I felt very proud to share with others the work that OLLI at UNC Asheville members and staff achieve together daily. We feel confident that we ensure a creative retirement for the people in our local community and for the people who come from around the country for our Paths to Creative Retirement and Creative Retirement Exploration Weekend programs. We have a very special program with a solid history and a bright future.
With gratitude for your commitment to our community of teachers and learners,
Catherine Frank
Executive Director

Proton Therapy:
A New Radiotherapy Treatment Lecture
by Bradlee Robbert
Wednesday, May 14, 11:30 am - 1:30 pm
Reuter Center's Manheimer Room,
free and open to the public
Radiation therapy has been around nearly 100 years, but traditional radiation therapy utilizes x-rays. An x-ray has no weight and travels at the speed of light. Now there is proton
therapy, which is particle therapy. The advantage of particle or proton therapy is that this subatomic particle can be accelerated or slowed down to stop the radiation dose inside the human body.
Robbert will present some of the past, present and future possibilities of the future of radiation oncology specifically highlighting proton therapy and will show actual treatment plans and compare them to traditional radiation therapy.
Bradlee Robbert, Director of Patient Services at the University of Florida Proton Therapy Institute, is a licensed radiation therapist with a bachelor's in healthcare administration and nearly fifteen years of medical experience, ten of those in radiation oncology.
