Dear OLLI Members,
Spring seems finally to have arrived here in Asheville. Here at OLLI, spring always brings us a performance by the Reuter Center Singers (RCS). I hope you will join us on either Saturday, May 3 at 7 pm or Sunday, May 4 at 7 pm for a trip back in time to enjoy the music of the Rat Pack (Sammy Davis, Jr., Dean Martin, and Frank Sinatra). The RCS director Chuck Taft and the singers put on a great show, and they are particularly delighted to share this music. Remember that donations are happily accepted to help with the purchase of music to keep the singers' repertoire fresh and challenging.
The Reuter Center Singers always pack the house, and we have to plan carefully to make effective use of space at the Reuter Center to accommodate all of the stimulating learning and fellowship opportunities we enjoy. We hope you will enjoy the article about the work of the facilities committee to help us make the most of this beautiful building and also to help us plan to meet future space needs.
With gratitude for your commitment to our community of teachers and learners,
Catherine Frank
Executive Director

Dr. Mark Gibney
Belk Distinguished Professor
Department of Political Science at UNC Asheville
The development and expansion of technology and its impact on the culture and society has always been a problem and presented a conundrum for political power and public policy, especially in democracies. Most
of us have our favorite stories and inventions where governments are "always catching up" or having to adapt to new technology. Think: the printing press, the steamboat, the minnieball, telegraphy, the Internet, ad infinitum.

Proton Therapy:
A New Radiotherapy Treatment Lecture
by Bradlee Robbert
May 14, 11:30 am - 1:30 pm
Reuter Center's Manheimer Room,
free and open to the public
Radiation therapy has been around nearly 100 years, but traditional radiation therapy utilizes x-rays. An x-ray has no weight and travels at the speed of light. Now there is proton
therapy, which is particle therapy. The advantage of particle or proton therapy is that this subatomic particle can be accelerated or slowed down to stop the radiation dose inside the human body.
Robbert will present some of the past, present and future possibilities of the future of radiation oncology specifically highlighting proton therapy and will show actual treatment plans and compare them to traditional radiation therapy.
Bradlee Robbert,
Director of Patient Services at the University of Florida Proton Therapy Institute, is a licensed radiation therapist with a bachelor's in healthcare administration and nearly fifteen years of medical experience, ten of those in radiation oncology.
