Dear OLLI Members,
Every day here at OLLI we have the opportunity to learn from one another.  We consistently marvel at the expertise of the people who teach our courses, enliven our discussions, run our committees, and generate the ideas that lead to continuous improvement of a ground-breaking program.

This week we had the privilege to hear from UNC Asheville undergraduates who presented their undergraduate research projects.  They talked about local issues, including the redevelopment of Eagle Street and the involvement of UNC Asheville students in cleaning up the South Asheville cemetery in Kenilworth where there are thousands of unmarked graves of African Americans.  The students talked about unique ways of mapping the effects of hemlock blight on the Blue Ridge Parkway and new cancer research.  There were students talking about the work of novelist Edith Wharton and showing their own work as painters and sculptors.

The research presented would probably earn these students a master's degree at many universities, but most of us who attended were most impressed by the genuine passion they exhibited and the concise and accessible ways they articulated their work.

If these young people are any indication, there will be a new generation of lifelong learners who will enliven the Reuter Center for years to come. The next time we sponsor this event, we hope you will make the time to experience the vitality and intellect of the students with whom we share the campus.

With gratitude for being part of a campus full of smart people (in life's first and second half) doing cool things,
Catherine Frank
Executive Director

A New Look at the Calendar mark your calendar

We have made a change in the OLLI newsletter calendar listing  to make it easier to see all that is happening at OLLI and on campus.

Instead of posting a separate calendar list for each week, we provide below links to OLLI's calendar and to the UNC Asheville Master Calendar (which also has an OLLI option).  We encourage you to use and become familiar with both calendars; they are a great resource for information about current events.

Over the last fifty years, Dr. Robert Moog and his company Moog Music have pioneered and developed tools that give artists the ability to create and express themselves in new and limitless ways. Moog Music synthesizers and other electronic musical instruments are designed and lovingly built in the Moog factory in downtown Asheville, N.C.

Since 2004, Moogfest has been a gathering for the musicians that worked closely with Bob and his instruments. When Moog Music brought the festival home to Asheville in 2008, it adopted a three-day multi-stage format to include contemporary bands and producers that exemplify the innovative spirit of electronic music. This year, Moogfest is amplifying its vision to include a conference of conversations and creative collaborations that eclipse any typical festival. Moogfest is charting the course for a future of unknown sight and sound.

Would you like to help make Moogfest a success?
