                                              | | | We look forward to seeing new members (and any of our members who want to learn more about OLLI opportunities) at our New Member Welcome this Friday, March 21, 10 am in the Manheimer Room at the Reuter Center.  Thanks to Ann Cowden and Kathy Rouse of the membership committee for doing everything to make sure that our members are welcomed to OLLI.
This newsletter includes notices of a number of programs that suggest that OLLI members want to make a difference not only at the Reuter Center but in the wider Asheville community. Over the past couple of years our civic engagement committee has focused on issues of food insecurity and education.  As a result, we are sponsoring a Manna FoodBank food drive the second two weeks of classes and also offering a volunteer opportunity at Asheville Middle School's "Reality Store" (see information on both opportunities in this newsletter) for people who want to get a taste of helping in the community.  The committee has worked successfully with the Asheville City Schools Foundation to create ongoing opportunities for our members to participate in the Read to Succeed program and to serve as mentors and tutors for middle school and high school students and to help at the schools in a variety of meaningful ways.  Special thanks to Sarah Reincke, Chuck Rosenblum, and Kathy Rouse for innovative thinking about how to make a difference in solving some of Asheville's challenges.
We are sponsoring a Goodwill Success Outfitters clothing drive March 24 - April 7 to gather gently used professional clothing.  This project arose from a program to connect OLLI members and UNC Asheville undergraduates entering the professional arena.  Many thanks to Jim Lenburg and Dick Murray for working with the UNC Asheville Career Center to make this mentoring program happen.
These various programs are all the result of good ideas carefully and persistently managed by our members, as are all of the programs here at OLLI. With gratitude for our community of teachers and learners,
Catherine Frank Executive Director |

 Anyone Can Draw! Workshop
 March 22 & 23, 2014, 9a.m. - 4p.m.

Fee: $105/member; $115/non-memberEstimated materials costs: $50 plus approx $15 for optional textbook.  Shopping list will be provided in advance of first session.
The ability to draw is not a magical talent.  Rather, it is a learned perceptual skill that improves with training and practice.  In this class, drawing is presented as a learnable skill.  Exercises focus on training the eye to perceive line, relationship, and value in a 3-D world, then translating that onto 2-D paper.  All levels of experience are welcome.         Jane Snyder is passionate about teaching art, and has studied watercolor and drawing for over 17 years.  In addition to instructing all levels of classes, Jane pursues an on-going study of studio and on-location watercolor painting, drawing and paper art. Open to the public; OLLI membership not required to register. Click here to download a Workshop registration form. |
