Dear OLLI Members,
We hope that you remembered to spring forward and move your clocks up an hour last night. I suspect after a cold winter, we are all looking forward to the budding of the trees and the warm days to enjoy the outdoors.

We have finally finished most of the make-up classes for College for Seniors Winter 2014 term and are looking forward to sending out information about spring schedules on Tuesday, March 11, in the late afternoon.  We have a record number of members (over 2100) and had over 950 people sign up for the Spring 2014 term already. Add/Drop will begin at 8 am on Wednesday, March 12, and there are always wonderful courses left to enjoy

Many thanks to the curriculum committee for putting together such a dynamic roster of courses, to the registration volunteers for making registration day move smoothly, to the faculty support committee for their attention to the needs of our instructors, to the College for Seniors committee for their commitment to continuous improvement, and to the OLLI staff (Ann Cadle, Jessika Carney, Laurel Jernigan, Anne Mock, Susan Poole, and Leanna Preston) for working together to allow our organization to grow and evolve in meaningful ways. Most importantly, thanks to all of our members for their commitment to our community.

College for Seniors spring courses begin March 24 and run through May 16.  We cannot wait to have the building alive with learning again.

With gratitude for our community of teachers and learners,
Catherine Frank

"Israel and the U.S."
by Dr. Heather Hawn, Mars Hill University
Tuesday, March 11, 2014, 7:30pm
in the Reuter Center's Manheimer Room
Modern Israel's struggles with the Palestinians have turned what was meant as a safe haven for Jews into the center of a decades-long conflict. The U.S. has stepped in as Israel's ally due to the two countries' shared values, providing years of unparalleled military and diplomatic support. But now those ties are being tested. The Arab Spring, Iran's nuclear ambitions, failed peace talks, and Israel's own decision to give Washington the cold shoulder have put new strains on the 65-year-old "special relationship."
An attorney and professor, Heather Hawn earned her BA from the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill, her JD from Campbell University and her PhD in political science from the University of South Carolina.  She practiced law for 10 years in Raleigh specializing in employment law and engaging in an active pro bono practice involving asylum petitions and other immigration issues. While at USC, Heather taught several classes in international and comparative politics including courses on US foreign policy, national security, nationalism and ethnicity, Latin American politics, international relations theory, controversies in world politics, and politics and music.  She has traveled extensively in Mexico and Guatemala conducting field research for her dissertation on the political behavior choices of the Maya. Currently she is an Assistant Professor of Political Science at Mars Hill University, where she also coordinates the pre-law and study abroad in Latin America programs.

Co Sponsored by UNC Asheville's department of political science, and the Osher Life Long Learning Institute at UNC Asheville.
