Dear OLLI Members,
We want to thank everyone who turned out for the "Meet Me at the Drive-In Social" on Friday.  We had an enthusiastic group of people who enjoyed '50s food, music and trivia.  We will have a full list of committee members in next week's newsletter, but we want to give special thanks to Jeanne Smolkin, Kathy Rouse, and Ann Cowden for their efforts to provide another opportunity to gather for fellowship and for their flexibility in managing a change in the event's date. Thanks also to Henry Morrow for taking photos and to Joe Sasfy for providing us with hours of great 1950s music.
We will be sending out a separate email with all of the details about registration for Spring 2014 to take place on Tuesday, February 25.  Please be aware that we have a separate registration form this term (click here for a copy that lists all the workshops described in the catalog) .  You may sign up for workshops at registration, but you may also sign up for workshops at any time by dropping in the office.
Special thanks to Anne Mock and Leanna Preston for their help in re-scheduling missed College for Seniors courses. And thank you for your patience as we work together to get all of our schedules back on track after our wintry weather.

 | World Affairs Council (WAC)  2014 Great Decisions Series
"China's Foreign Policy"  Dr. Jim Lenburg,  Mars Hill University and  OLLI at UNC Asheville   Tuesday, February 25, 7:30 pm Reuter Center's Manheimer Room  China has gone to great lengths to emphasize the "peaceful" nature of its meteoric rise. Yet few dispute that China is the dominant regional power in Asia, and in recent years Beijing has begun to flex its muscles regionally in order to advance its strategic interests. What does the rapid rise of this new superpower mean for other countries in the region, and are there potential points of conflict with the U.S. as it "pivots" to Asia?      Jim Lenburg retired from Mars Hill University in 2006 after 33 years teaching history and humanities. His major field of interest is US foreign relations and Chinese history. Since retirement, Jim has been teaching courses at OLLI at UNC Asheville where he also serves as chair of the OLLI Steering Council. Jim has visited China on several occasions beginning in 1978. In 2004 he was a Visiting Professor at Jilin University in Changchun, China. He has a bachelor's degree in history from Butler University and a PhD in history from Penn State.
Co Sponsored by The Department of Political Science, and the OLLI at UNC Asheville.    No admission charge to WAC members or  UNC Asheville  students. All others $10. OLLI members receive a discount on WAC membership |

Be p art of a community-wide effort to support families and improve children's mental health! Buncombe County has received a grant to implement the most extensively researched parenting support program in the world, Triple P-Positive Parenting Program Triple P offers many ways for parents to get support, and it never prescribes what parents should do. The programs offers a "menu" of proven
strategies that parents are assisted to choose from and adapt to their family.
At the end of March, Buncombe County will offer a 3-day training (followed by two more days of accreditation activities in the following months) to prepare practitioners to deliver one of the more intensive interventions, Triple P Group, an eight-session program.

Triple P, when made widely accessible to caregivers in a community, has been proven to reduce substantiated child maltreatment cases, out-of-home placements, and hospitalizations for abuse-related injury, as well as reducing social/emotional/behavioral issues in children.

If you have a background in counseling, social work, nursing, public health, child development, education, or another related field and you want to use your skills to improve the lives of children in Buncombe County, contact Deanna LaMotte, Triple P Coordinator,828-351-8098, Deanna.lamotte@buncombecounty.org  |
