Dear OLLI Members,
The weather has disrupted our College for Seniors schedule and the distribution of catalogs (and almost everything else in our lives here in Western North Carolina). The catalog is online;
Please take note of the many events and lectures we have been able to reschedule, including our Advance Care Planning Workshop, Melinda Stuart's Fab Friday lecture on "The Presidents' Sweethearts" and Dr. Jim McCarrick's Fab Friday lecture "Sleep Medicine," and our member social, "Meet Me at the Drive-In." We will be working with instructors to re-schedule some classes.
Thank you for your patience as we work together to get all of our schedules back on track.

World Affairs Council
2014 Great Decisions Series
Tuesday, February 18, 7:30 pm
"Food Security and Climate Change"
by Dr. Amy Knisley,
Warren Wilson College
As a sixth of the world's population suffers from chronic hunger, and we all experience a changing climate where water becomes scarce and once fertile land becomes barren, the US finds itself faced with new challenges in securing the globe. The US is getting ready, but can it lead the way to climate reform?
A specialist in environmental law as it relates to land use and natural resources, Dr. Knisley has a PhD in philosophy from the University of Colorado and a master of environmental law and policy from Vermont Law School. She is a professor of environmental studies at Warren Wilson College and the inaugural occupant of a newly created position in policy and law.
Co-sponsored by The Department of Political Science, and OLLI at UNC Asheville.
No admission charge to WAC members or UNC-Asheville students. All others $10.00

Fab Friday Lecture
The Presidents' Sweethearts
by Melinda Stuart
Friday, February 21, 11:30 am, Manheimer Room
(Note this is a new date, rescheduled from Feb 14)
With the exception of a handful of bachelors or widowers, few men have gone through the presidency alone. Most have had a wife to share the responsibility of leading the nation, performing social protocols, and acting as world ambassador. Unelected and unpaid, First Ladies have brought varying talents, backgrounds, and desires to an unscripted job at America's First House. Some have loved it, while others couldn't wait to leave. We'll take a fond look at some love stories covering the 214 years that presidents and their sweethearts have called the White House home.
During 35 years as a museum historian and educator, Melinda Stuart worked with the Smithsonian Institution, the White House, and other museums. In 1980 she organized an exhibit on White House history and art visited by First Lady Rosalynn Carter. At OLLI, Melinda teaches about museums, first ladies, and women's history.
Fab Friday lectures are free and open to the public.
