Dear OLLI Members,
In the coming week we have a full roster of activities for our members to learn and to share our spirit of community. We have opportunities to address important and serious issues and to simply have fun.
Early in the week you can attend the World Affairs Council lecture by Dr. Amy Knisley or Warren Wilson College on "Food Security and Climate Change." On Wednesday, the Blue Ridge Orchestra will hold its weekly open rehearsal. On Thursday, we will hold an Advance Care Planning Workshop to address end-of-life issues. On Friday at 11:30 am, Melinda Stuart will offer a Fab Friday lecture on "The Presidents' Sweethearts," and at 5:30 pm the membership social "Meet Me at the Drive-In" will be full of good music, good humor, and good food and drink. On Friday we will also post our Spring 2014 catalog online.  If you would like a sneak peek of the College for Seniors spring course line-up, click here for a link to the OLLI website.
And while we have many things to celebrate here at OLLI, we are this week mourning the passing of Ahmad Amara, a long-time OLLI member and College for Seniors instructor.  We do not have details about planned memorials, but we know that Ahmad touched many of us with his keen intellect and gentle spirit.  We know he loved his life here in Asheville and the continuing opportunity to teach and learn.

Thank you for the many ways you contribute to our community.

 | Fab Friday Lecture
Melinda Stuart on  "The Presidents' Sweethearts"  Friday, Feb. 14, 11:30 am,  Manheimer Room            On February 14, plan to attend to hear about "The Presidents' Sweethearts" from OLLI member and College for Seniors instructor Melinda Stuart.  With the exception of a handful of bachelors or widowers, few men have gone through the presidency alone. Most have had a wife to share the responsibility of leading the nation, performing social protocols, and acting as world ambassador. Unelected and unpaid, first ladies have brought varying talents, backgrounds, and desires to an unscripted job at America's First House; some have loved it, others couldn't wait to leave.  This Valentine's Day we'll take a fond look at some love stories covering the 214 years that presidents and their sweethearts have called the White House home.       During 35 years as a museum historian and educator, Melinda Stuart worked with the Smithsonian Institution, the White House, and other museums.  In 1980 she organized an exhibit on White House history and art visited by First Lady Rosalynn Carter. At OLLI, Melinda teaches about museums, first ladies, and women's history.   Fab Friday lectures are free and open to the public.  |
