Friday, January 17, 7 pm in Lipinsky Auditorium in Lipinsky Hall, UNC Asheville will host a showing of the documentary Gideon's Army by filmmaker Dawn Porter. The showing is free and open to the public.
As a lawyer, Dawn Porter witnessed a criminal justice system in distress. Twelve million people are arrested in the United States each year and millions of those cases proceed through the criminal justice system. It is not uncommon for lawyers to handle hundreds of cases at a time. As a lawyer, Dawn Porter struggled with what these numbers mean for our system of justice. She attempts to document the answer through her film Gideon's Army which follows three public defenders in the Deep South during their daily mission to counsel hundreds of defendants through a strained criminal justice system.Dawn Porter and Travis Williams, one of the three public defenders followed in the film, will be on hand to discuss the film and its content, and to respond to questions. Click here to find out more about the film.
The UNC Asheville film showing, in cooperation with the Martin Luther King, Jr. Association of Asheville and Buncombe County, is free and open to the public.

Dear OLLI Members,
The OLLI staff is looking forward to having our members back at the Reuter Center as we begin the Winter 2014 College for Seniors classes. If you are a longtime OLLI member, please be sure to look out for new members and welcome them to our community of teachers and learners. If you are a new OLLI member, please ask questions and let staff know if there is anything we can do to make OLLI a more welcoming place.
The Reuter Cafe will be open this term 9 am to 2 pm Monday through Thursday and 9 to 1 pm on Fridays.
This newsletter includes a number of opportunities for volunteering. The Curriculum Committee is looking for people who might like to teach art history and architecture courses and for those who would like to be part of the law, business, and finance subcommittee. The Civic Engagement kicks off its Call to Action initiative working with the Asheville City Schools Foundation on January 15. The Kids at Work program is looking for volunteers as well. Volunteers are the heart of our program, and we appreciate the hundreds of members who volunteer their time and talent to make our community a better place.
Remember that the Reuter Center and the OLLI office will be closed Monday, January 20, in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. The campus is commemorating the day with a screening of a documentary about the criminal justice system, Gideon's Army, followed by a discussion including the film's creator, Dawn Porter.
Thank you for the many ways you contribute to our community.

Better Hearing!
Remember, Room 102A (the Manheimer Room) now has a hearing loop! Use your hearing aids (fitted with a T-coil) and tune in to enjoy personal sound amplification for lectures and programs!
No aids? "Normal" hearing? Ask at the front desk to sign out a headset that allows ANYONE to pick up the personal signal. It comes direct to your ears without loss of quality!
Get looped! Give our Hearing Loop a try this term!
