ADVANCING DIVERSITY AT OLLI: NEXT STEPS
paper_people_hdr.jpg
The Diversity Group met in December 2013 and approved a proposal that would expand the core group to include OLLI members who are eager to support diversity initiatives at OLLI.

So far at least twenty members have expressed interest, and there is good reason to believe that others would like to be included.  The immediate next step is to have an organizational meeting for this larger group on

Thursday, January 9, 2014, 3 pm.

If you wish to be included in this expanded effort please e-mail Steve Kaagan, [email protected]

OLLI Report

As 2014 dawns and we look to the future, let us share with you several of the prime reasons we can all celebrate the place OLLI at UNC Asheville has in our lives:

Our leadership, both staff and volunteer, consistently positions our OLLI as a leader in the field of lifelong learning, providing experiences that allow our members to continue to grow and challenge themselves and to belong to a community of people who make it all happen.  Click Here to Read More.

  Adverse Weather Information
sparkling-snowy-trees.jpg
OLLI classes, events, meetings, and other activities will be canceled or delayed when UNC Asheville classes are canceled or delayed for adverse weather.  OLLI members should consult the UNC Asheville website at www.unca.edu to receive the latest information regarding the University Adverse Weather and Emergency Bulletins.  Click here to view the university's adverse weather procedures.

You may also call the university's Snow Line at 828.259.3050 for reports of closings and delays.  By 8 am on bad weather days, the OLLI staff will post specific program information on our outgoing messages at 828.251.6140 or 828.251.6188.

We will also, if at all possible, send an email to active members of the Center by 8 am regarding OLLI cancellations, closings, and delays.
Dear OLLI Members,
I hope you all had a restful holiday season and are as ready as I am to return to our community of teachers and learners. 2013 was a remarkable year as we celebrated our 25th anniversary as a program and our 10th year in the Reuter Center.  It was a time to take stock of what we have achieved and also a time to look forward to the many things we can accomplish together as a program. Please take a look at the report created by the OLLI Executive Committee that outlines the many ways we have grown as a program over the last few years.

In 2014 we will continue to add and promote civic engagement programming (see information in this newsletter about the "Call to Action" and OLLI's involvement with the Asheville City Schools Foundation in this newsletters) and to find new ways to deliver and expand our life transitions programs both locally and nationally.

We are working with our special interest groups to make sure that they remain a vital component in the unique ways we build community.  The College for Seniors will continue to build a vibrant and creative curriculum (see information in this newsletter about making a proposal to teach in Summer 2014). We look forward to understanding how we might be more inclusive and to figuring out a registration system that is sustainable and convenient. Finally, we look forward to hosting lifelong learning programs from around the South as we convene the 2014 Southern Regional Lifelong Learning Meeting July 30 through August 1.

We have big plans for 2014.  Unfortunately, we may have a difficult start to this week with bitterly cold weather and the possibility of snow and ice here in Asheville tomorrow, Monday, January 6. We have information about our adverse weather policy in this newsletter. Please check your email before venturing out to the Reuter Center on any day when there are closings in our area.  We also remind everyone that ours is a program of learning for the love of it.  Never venture out if conditions in your area are hazardous.

If you are a new OLLI member or if you would like to find out more about getting the most from your OLLI experience, please join us for the New Member Welcome on Friday, January 10. It appears we will have warmed up by the end of the week, so we are hopeful this event will be held on schedule!

Thank you for the many ways you contribute to our community.  All the best in 2014,
Catherine Frank
Executive Director
