ADVANCING DIVERSITY AT OLLI:
NEXT STEPS
The Diversity Group met recently and approved a proposal that would expand the core group formed this fall to include OLLI members who are eager to support diversity initiatives at OLLI.
So far at least twenty members have expressed interest, and there is good reason to believe that others would like to be included.
The immediate next step is to have an organizational meeting for this larger group in early January, likely to be Thursday or Friday, January 9th or 10th. At that meeting discussion will center on an agenda for a subsequent day-long workshop facilitated by a diversity expert. The aims of the workshop are to increase consciousness of the issues surrounding diversity, identify doable projects that group members would undertake, identify allies in the community with whom we might partner to build our capacity, and most important, develop a sense of common purpose and mutual commitment.
If you wish to be included in this expanded effort please e-mail Steve Kaagan, Skaagan@msu.edu

Dear OLLI Members,
We want our members to be aware of our schedule for the next few weeks. We will be sending out Winter 2014 schedules on December 16 and begin the add/drop period at 8 am on December 17.
We will close at 5 pm on Thursday, December 19, and re-open at 8 am on Monday, January 6. Our last newsletter for 2013 will be next Sunday, December 15. To enter the holiday spirit, we hope you will join us for the Reuter Center Singers Holiday Concert tomorrow, Monday, December 9 at 7:30 pm. As we enter this season of celebration with family and friends, remember that OLLI merchandise makes a great gift. In addition to the lidded mug and tote bag, there is a ball cap now available. (See the link in this email.) Looking ahead, we hope that some of you are able to take advantage of the opportunity on December 30 to enjoy a UNC Asheville women's basketball game court side, hosted by the former women's coach, Betsy Blose. See details in this newsletter.
Finally, we want to celebrate the numbers for our Winter 2014 registration. We now have a membership of almost 1900, surpassing our total for all of last year with many months left in this membership year. We processed 797 registrations on December 3, which surpasses the number for opening day of Fall 2013 (which was also a record setting day). We know that you come to OLLI for the sense of community and for the great classes. We will strive to maintain that community spirit as we grow. Thanks so much to everyone who gives so generously of their time and talent to make our program strong and satisfying.
Thank you for the many ways you contribute to our community.
Catherine Frank
