 | ADVANCING DIVERSITY AT OLLI: NEXT STEPS   The Diversity Group met recently and approved a proposal that would expand the core group formed this fall to include OLLI members who are eager to support diversity initiatives at OLLI.  So far at least twenty members have expressed interest, and there is good reason to believe that others would like to be included.
The immediate next step is to have an organizational meeting for this larger group in early January, likely to be Thursday or Friday, January 9th or 10th. At that meeting discussion will center on an agenda for a subsequent day-long workshop facilitated by a diversity expert. The aims of the workshop are to increase consciousness of the issues surrounding diversity, identify doable projects that group members would undertake, identify allies in the community with whom we might partner to build our capacity, and most important, develop a sense of common purpose and mutual commitment.

If you wish to be included in this expanded effort please e-mail Steve Kaagan, Skaagan@msu.edu

Dear OLLI Members, We will be sending out an email in about 15 minutes with all of the details that should help you make the most of Winter 2014 registration on Tuesday, December 3.   We hope you have had time this past week to rest and think about the reasons we have to be thankful. Here at OLLI, we are grateful for the many people who make this program run.  We have a dedicated staff (Ann Cadle, Jessika Carney, Laurel Jernigan, Anne Mock, Susan Poole, and Leanna Preston) of professionals who promote and enhance our mission every day.    We have a thoughtful group of leaders in Jim Lenburg, Judy LaMee, Cindy Berryman-Fink, and Matt Mengel and all the chairs of the OLLI Steering Council (Kirk Borland, Larry Haas, Katherine Jordan, Ken Macfarlane, Kathleen Mainardi, Charlotte Moore, Barry Mundt, Chuck Rosenblum, Kathy Rouse, Steve Schleifer, and Gail Sobel) who spend countless hours improving and promoting all of our programs.       We are grateful for all of the Special Interest Group members and leaders who take learning and fellowship outside the classroom.   It takes hundreds of people to make the College for Seniors (CFS) run, and we are grateful for the joy and enlightenment they produce. CFS chairs Charlotte Moore and Gail Sobel (whose mantras of collaboration and continuous improvement have led to unprecedented excellence), curriculum committee chairs Maryann Jones and Paul Williamson, and faculty support chairs Dave Castel and Paula Withrow lead their committees to preserve what makes our programs work and to pursue what will make them better.  Because of these leaders and many dedicated committee members, we have offerings that continue to challenge and delight.
And of course, we are grateful for the community of teachers who generously share their time and talent and learners who share their insights and passion. We are grateful for the everyday reminders of the joys and possibilities of life's second half and the potential of working together to create something better than any of us could achieve alone.
Thank you for the many ways you contribute to our community.
