Dear OLLI Members,
We hope you are enjoying perusing the offerings in the Winter 2014 catalog. Please click here to enjoy the catalog online. We will send full details on registration, to be held Tuesday, December 3, in the Sunday newsletter on December 1.
Please be aware that we will close at 5 pm on Tuesday, November 26, and re-open at 8 am on Monday, December 2, in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday. Please be aware that we will be operating with a small staff next week.
We have something to be especially thankful for this holiday. Laurel Jernigan, who directs our Civic Engagement, Life Transitions, and Workshops programs and is our volunteer coordinator, gave birth on November 23 to Annabelle Hazel, a 9 pound, 3 ounce girl, the latest member of the OLLI family. Congratulations to Laurel, her husband Will, and her son Owen. We know Laurel and her family will manage this life transition with joy and the good wishes of everyone here at the Reuter Center.
Thank you for the many ways you contribute to our community. Have a happy Thanksgiving!
Catherine Frank
Executive Director

"Africa: A Hopeful Continent?"
Tuesday, December 3, 7:30 pm
Reuter Center's Manheimer Room
Can Africa's economic improvements in the 2000s, with GDP growth more than any other region other than Asia's, be sustained, and how will it shape the lives of average Africans? Raymond Gilpin is a published author, regular blogger, and currently the academic dean at the Africa Center for Strategic Studies in Washington, DC. He is a Cambridge University trained economist and has worked at the World Bank as well as with a number of African financial institutions.
This event is the fourth in our 2013-2014 World Affairs Council series. Members who have subscribed to the series but have not received their WAC-WNC card may do so when they enter. For those who have not subscribed, annual memberships may be purchased "at the door." UNC Asheville students are admitted free. Single admission price for this event is $10.

ADVANCING DIVERSITY AT OLLI - NEXT STEPS
The Diversity Group met recently and approved a proposal that would expand the core group to include OLLI members who are eager to support diversity initiatives at OLLI. So far at least twenty members have expressed interest, and there is good reason to believe that others would like to be included.
The immediate next step is to have an organizational meeting for this larger group in early January, likely to be Thursday or Friday, January 9th or 10th. At that meeting discussion will center on an agenda for a subsequent day-long workshop facilitated by a diversity expert. The aims of the workshop are to increase consciousness of the issues surrounding diversity, identify doable projects that group members would undertake, identify allies in the community with whom we might partner to build our capacity, and most important develop a sense of common purpose and mutual commitment.
If you wish to be included in this expanded effort please e-mail Steve Kaagan, Skaagan@msu.edu
