Dear OLLI Members,
This has been a memorable week.  We wrapped up Leadership Asheville Seniors (LAS) 27, the first version of the program planned and carried out by program director Laurel Jernigan. Participants responded enthusiastically to the opportunity to learn more about the history and challenges of our community and are already talking about what they will contribute to the program that will begin next September.

We finished another successful College for Seniors term.  Thanks to Susan Poole and Anne Mock for their leadership of the program and to Ann Cadle, Jessika Carney, and Leanna Preston for the many ways they support our lifelong learners.  We are grateful for the committee members who give their time and talent to plan the curriculum and the dedicated instructors who teach courses that stimulate and entertain us.

Today, Sunday, November 10, 3 pm is the final lecture in the Wilma Dykeman Lecture Series sponsored by the Wilma Dykeman Legacy.  We hope that you take the opportunity to hear Ms. Dykeman's son Jim Stokely speak about his mother as a traveler. Ms. Dykeman's books are widely available.  You may want to know also that Asheville's local arts and culture journal The Laurel has been running a recently discovered autobiography of Dykeman's early years growing up in Asheville.  Click here to follow the link to the first installment of "Family of Earth."

Philosopher and activist Cornel West spoke to a crowd at Kimmel Arena on Wednesday, November 6; we hope that some of you had the opportunity to attend.  West is a rousing speaker who challenges and inspires his audience. At one point West said,  "Anytime you critically examine yourself, courageously, critically, and give up a certain assumption or presupposition, give up a dogma, it's a form of death. You're in the process of growing and maturing. You're in the process of developing, you're in the process of being awakened and reborn and there is no rebirth without death."  We hear that Professor West was impressed with the UNC Asheville students and faculty and that he expressed some interest in returning for a more extended stay. Maybe he'll retire here! OLLI members will have the opportunity to learn from UNC Asheville history professor Dr. Darin Waters, who served as West's tour guide to Asheville's African American history.  Dr. Waters and OLLI member Carol Rogoff Hallstrom will be leading a course titled "Asheville in Black and White: Race Relations in Asheville" during the Winter 2014 term.  West's book Race Matters will be the text for the course.

Thank you for the many ways you contribute to our community, examining, growing, maturing, developing, awakening, and, we hope,  having a great time.
