 |    We are changing....
A transformation is taking place in Room 120 ( the computer lab) at the Reuter Center.  What has for a some time been a quiet and seldom scheduled space  will soon be transformed to a multi-purpose room where  yoga classes may stretch and bend, dance classes can tap a toe, and assorted groups hold meetings or classes or workshops.  The refurbished room will be scheduled beginning during Winter 2014 term. Hands-on computer instruction will continue in a different way.  The new laptop cart - a cart with twelve laptop computers - will be set up in any classroom that requires a computer for each student so every classroom may become a computer lab.    When the refurbishment began, we decided to repurpose some of the computers from the lab. Now you will find new computers on both upper and lower lobbies set up for OLLI members to use to check email, surf the web, etc. Please be considerate and limit your time if someone else is waiting to use the computer.

Fab Friday Lunch and Learn Lecture
Friday, November 8, 11:30 amCommonly Missed Diagnoses
by Dr. David Mouw Sometimes our illnesses are  misdiagnosed because we misjudge the symptoms and don't seek medical attention. Sometimes we see a doctor, and still an incorrect diagnosis is made.  This lecture will focus on missed diagnoses that are 1) common in older persons;  2) especially interesting; 3) life-threatening.  The lecture should improve your self-diagnostic skills and lessen your odds of getting the wrong diagnosis! The audience response system will be used to assess your diagnostic acumen.  David Mouw, PhD (human physiology), MD (family practice) with added qualification in geriatrics, is retired, and an active OLLI member.  He has given eight previous HES lectures.   Free and open to the public, this lecture is part of the Health Education Series.

Dear OLLI Members, We had a small turnout for our discussion of the diversity task force survey and our next steps in working to make OLLI at UNC Asheville a more inclusive environment. We know that this is a complex issue that arouses strong feelings, and the Steering Council has made it a priority to begin a process of internal assessment and a review of community needs and resources.  Thanks to Allen Brailsford, Steve Kaagan, Don Locke, Ted McIrvine, Deborah Miles, Susan Poole, and Cissie Stevens for beginning this important work and to the members of the research committee for their input in creating the survey.  If you are interested in seeing the results of the survey, click here to review a copy of the presentation . If you are interested in working on this effort at OLLI, please let me know by responding to this email.
Check out the rest of this newsletter to see that a number of committees are looking for more members, and we always welcome you to contribute to the success of OLLI by volunteering. We are excited that a group of OLLI members have come together to revive the idea of a literary "magazine," and they are having a contest to create a name for the new effort. See information in this newsletter about ways to get more involved.

Thank you for the many ways you contribute to our community.
