Fab Friday Lunch and Learn Lecture

Celtic Spirituality by Jude Lally
Join us for a journey with Celtic goddess Brigid, from Bear Mother to Celtic goddess and Irish saint, Mary of the Gael in Scotland and her migration to the foothills of Appalachia.  The goddess Brigid is one of Ireland's greatest divinities. Her roots stretch back far into the Neolithic where facets of her can be recognized in early bear veneration. Later she travels to Ireland as Celtic goddess eventually merges into Saint Brigid. To the Scots she was 'Mary of the Gael,' foster mother to Christ and midwife to emerging Christianity.

Jude Lally is a fiber artist and workshop facilitator working with Celtic spirituality and creativity to enhance our connections to nature. She received her master's degree in human ecology from the University of Strathclyde (Glasgow), which underpins her work in creating empowering responses to social crisis. She has presented her work at conferences at Edinburgh University as well as festivals in the US.  You can read more about her and her work at her website www.celticsoulcraft.com.

 THE LOOP:

Everyone Benefits!

The Hearing Loop that debuted in Room 102 (Manheimer) this September, uses a simple magnetic technology to bring quality sound from the microphones directly to your ears, ImpairedHearingSymbolwhether you wear hearing aids or not.

It's true that the loop is designed to connect to hearing aids using a built-in telecoil, but if your aid lacks a T-coil--or if you lack a hearing aid--you can still enjoy enhanced hearing and comprehension at lectures and discussions in Manheimer Room by borrowing a headset from the OLLI office! Six of these new sets are now available. So far few have been checked out. Give them some exercise!

Be among the "tech-savvy" members here at OLLI and check out one of the new headsets this week! You'll hear every word!   (You will be asked to deposit your driver's license for security.)

Dear OLLI Members,
Today, Sunday, October 27, 1:30 pm, OLLI will host the Asheville's Living Treasures celebration as Shirley Cohen, Billy Gardenhight, and Adelaide Key are honored for their work in Asheville and Buncombe County. We are pleased to be able to partner with Asheville's Living Treasures as they honor the elders of our region who have given of their time and talents to make our community a better place.

Take some time to read Julie Gros's article in this newsletter about College for Seniors superstar instructor Farley Snell, who gives so generously of his time and talent to make OLLI a better place.

We hope that you will attend the Diversity Task Force Forum Thursday, October 31 at 4 pm.  We will be discussing responses to the survey, outlining some potential next steps and hearing from you about your reactions to the survey and suggestions for ways to pursue greater diversity at OLLI. We know that this is a complex issue, but we hope that we will find a way forward to create an inclusive environment.

Finally, tomorrow, Monday, October 28, watch for the link to our Annual Member Survey. Please help us continue to improve OLLI by taking the survey.

Thank you for the many ways you contribute to our community.
Catherine Frank
Executive Director

Farley Snell: An "accidental" treasure of philosophy and religion at OLLI's College for Seniors

by Julie Gros

Picture a professor of philosophy and religion at OLLI at UNC Asheville. He is an ordained Methodist minister with a masters in divinity and a PhD from the celebrated Union Theological Seminary in New York City. He was chair of the Department of Religion and Philosophy at Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas, for twenty-one years as well as a member of City Council there for 6 years.

Enter Farley Snell, star-quality instructor at CFS, commanding a fan club of followers with wait-listed attendance in his classrooms that typically include 2/3 students who have taken his classes before. Confident, charming, and humble at the same time, he paints a picture of happenstance.

"The story of my life is a series of accidents", explains Farley. "I never had a plan. Doors opened that I didn't even know existed." His rather magical life started in Eau Gallie, Florida, a very small town where his family lived without telephone, radio, or television. "Apart from the fact that I was a paper boy and delivered the newspaper every morning, I would have never known there was anything outside of there."

It was Farley's summers spent at a Methodist youth camp that had an impact on his future. There he learned that "church was a good place to go" and understood how to "feel significant" as a person. He also met girls.

At Florida Southern College in Lakeland, Florida, he pursued his future bride-to-be, Ann, "as soon as she stepped off the bus" into her freshmen orientation. They were married two years later.

After what he describes as a mediocre yet broad undergraduate education, he chanced upon a good friend who advised him to enroll in a top seminary. So he did. "Going to Union in New York was absolutely the most important thing that ever happened to me. When I got there, I was terrified for almost a semester." Farley was exposed to "superstar" professors and scholars from all over the world at Union.

New York-living enchanted him and Ann during a golden era of Broadway that was turning out landmark productions of plays by Eugene O'Neill, Tennessee Williams and others. "It was mind-blowing, a very special time."

Farley then spent nine years of serving as campus minister at the University of Miami and Indiana University. He considers this the second most important period of his life because he was "really forced out of the circle of churchliness." He essentially played the role of a social worker providing abortion counseling and refuge to teenage runaways. This work was during the 60's "when all hell was breaking loose", making for a very eventful time.

In the meantime, Farley earned his doctorate and was "waiting to teach and be smart". He certainly got the chance at Southwestern where his 27-year teaching career unfolded.

In 2008, Farley and Ann moved permanently to Asheville. In terms of values and beliefs, he recognizes that "Asheville's got everything."An important Jewish presence, a large gay and lesbian community, non-traditional churches, new-age followers, ... all make for a stimulating back-drop for the series of courses in religion Farley has taught at OLLI since 2009.

"Teaching at OLLI gives me a chance to rethink my material in a different setting. This is a very exciting thing, to be able to teach people who don't have to be here and have sought you out." Farley has "upgraded" courses he taught during his former career for the discerning OLLI audience, spending up to 100 hours per course reading and developing content.

"My years at OLLI have also allowed me to discover so much about my teaching and myself. I have my own faith but I am not that interested in religion except as a historical reality. What people say and do in a unique period of history and how they came to their religious conclusions just fascinates me."

Farley's future plans include, above all, enjoying himself. He will continue to teach for a little while longer. He quips, "One of my esteemed elder colleagues admitted to me one day that he had fallen asleep in his own lecture." No doubt, chance will step in again before he gets to that point.

Dear OLLI Members,

In this season of thanksgiving, we invite you to take time to reflect on the many gifts our OLLI staff brings every day to our sense of community, joyful learning, and the overall experience that brings us back to the Reuter Center day after day, season after season.

As we go about our busy ways, it is easy to forget to express our thanks to them for all they do.  Let's not take all this goodness for granted.

Won't you take a moment to find ways to express your gratitude to our  staff for making OLLI at UNC Asheville such a special place. To Ann Cadle, Jessika Carney, Catherine Frank, Laurel Jernigan, Anne Mock, Susan Poole, and Leanna Preston, individually and collectively, we extend a rousing "THANK YOU SO MUCH!"

Sincerely,
Jim Lenburg,  OSC Chair
Judy LaMee, OSC Chair Elect

"Revolution Interrupted"
Tuesday, November 5, 7:30 pm

This event is the third in our 2013-2014 World Affairs Council series.  Members who have subscribed to the series but have not received their WAC-WNC card may do so when they check in at the event on November 5.
