Dear OLLI Members,

College for Seniors (CFS) courses are off to a great start.  We want to thank the class representatives who do such a great job making classes function smoothly by taking attendance and helping with many other details that make the CFS classroom a welcoming place.  Special thanks to Jacque Morgan and Anita Shields for all that they do to recruit and train the class representatives.  If you want to be part of this team, please check the box on the registration form when you sign up for Winter 2014 classes.

We are beginning to think about nominations for our OLLI Steering Council officers.  If you would like to know more about service or know of someone you think would like to be involved in OLLI leadership, please let me know and I will pass along your information to Judy

LaMée, chair of the nominating committee.

Please note that the Reuter Café will be closed Monday and Tuesday, October 7 and 8, since this is fall break on the main campus.  Also note that the café is now closed on Fridays because they did not do enough business to justify staying open.  If you value the opportunity to have this amenity in the Reuter Center, please vote with your dollars and make purchases when the café is open. Also, be sure to see the information in this newsletter about the many dining options on campus.

Our staff and volunteers work diligently to make sure that we maintain an environment that fosters learning and community.  If you would like to help in that effort, our doors are always open to productive conversation.

INTERDISCIPLINARY STEM SEMINAR SERIES
(Science Technology Engineering Mathematics)

Sustainable Transportation: A Future Worth Creating
Tuesday, Oct. 15,
 4:30 pm
 Reuter Center, Rm 206

Speaker: Dave Erb,
UNC Asheville Engineering Department

Environmental concerns and energy supply issues pose significant challenges to the future of the world's transportation systems.  Due to its already-high level of mobility, the United States may require more re-direction and change than other parts of the world.  While there are many potential paths to sustainability, they are not all created equal in terms of costs, benefits, ease of political implementation, and social justice.

Quantitative and qualitative analyses of likely futures indicate that four simultaneous steps are likely to produce the most desirable future US transportation system, providing an optimal balance of access and the sacrifice required to achieve it.  In order of effectiveness, these are: 1) reduction of national vehicle miles traveled (VMT); 2) better matching of vehicles to the tasks they perform; 3) powertrain electrification; and 4) the addition of significant photovoltaic electric production in a distributed generation grid model.
