What Bees Do

Tuesday, September 24
4:30-6:30 pm

A Call to Action:
"A Life's Work:  What Bees Do and What We Do...Both Making Life Possible

For the final symposium in  OLLI's Civic Engagement Committee's four-part series focusing on food insecurity in Western North Carolina, we will hear about the importance of bees on food production.

Laurey Masterton is a beekeeper, proprietor of Laurey's Café, and chef/spokesperson for The National Honey Board. She has also recently published The Fresh Honey Cookbook: 84 Recipes from a Beekeeper's Kitchen where she shares both her experiences as a beekeeper and some of her "gourmet comfort food" recipes. Come learn why a healthy bee population is so integral to our local food supply.

This presentation is free and open to the public.

Judy LaMée and Kirk Borland worked with members of the OLLI marketing committee to create this commemorative publication celebrating 25 years of excellent programming as a lifelong learning institute and ten years of operation in the Reuter Center. We hope you will take some time to learn the history of our organization and to enjoy the talents of our marketing committee.

We Want You!
Are you interested in teaching?  Do you want to help line up great classes?  During the week of September 30-October 3, OLLI's College for Seniors Curriculum Committee representatives will be available at a table in the lower lobby to answer your questions about teaching at OLLI and/or volunteering with Curriculum  Topic Groups.  Please stop by!

Remember the 'new' parking lot!

If you arrive and find full parking lots next to the Reuter Center, remember there is another parking lot just up from the Center.  Exit our parking lot from the upper level and turn right.

The "new" parking lot will be on your left...and is an short easy walk from the front door of the Center!  This parking lot opened earlier this year and we thought a reminder that it's there for your use would be helpful.

ImpairedHearingSymbol
T-COIL AND LOOP = WORKING TOGETHER FOR BETTER HEARING IN MANHEIMER!

The key to taking advantage of the new hearing loop technology is a "T-coil" (or telecoil). This tiny element--found in most hearing aids (and all cochlear implants)--picks up a signal that brings the presenter's voice straight to you.
Hearing-impaired listeners without aids or implants, may borrow an equivalent headset from the OLLI office.

Best-selling novelist and UNC Asheville graduate Wiley Cash will headline "Celebrating Madison County," featuring literature, music and photography, presented on October 25-26 at UNC Asheville. Cash will offer a solo reading, and other well-known area writers, photographers and performers will share their creative responses to the cultural heritage and rugged physical beauty of Madison County during this free, two-day event.

Dear OLLI Members,
We had a successful beginning to our Fall 2013 College for Seniors courses, and it was exciting to have the energy of a new term. Please see the information in this newsletter about ways to help improve the College for Seniors experience for everyone.

The energy continues with special events almost every day this week. On Monday, September 23 the TRIAD series continues with a lecture on protecting against identity theft.  On Tuesday, September 24, join us to hear Laurey Masterton, local chef and social entrepreneur, sharing her experiences as a beekeeper and showing the importance of bees to sustain our food production.  On Wednesday, September 25 we will celebrate 25 years as a program and 10 years in the building with cake and punch and the distribution of new lanyards for your name tags.  Special Interest Groups will also be on hand to help you get the best of your OLLI experience.

On Friday, September 27 you can hear Affrilachian storyteller Lyn Ford share stories from a side of Appalachian life that may surprise you.  And on Sunday, September 29, the Wilma Dykeman Lecture Series continues with UNC Asheville professor Darin Water's lecture on "Wilma Dykeman as Journalist."

Sometimes people say that the newsletter is just too long to read all the way through.  It is so long because of the many ways you can learn and enjoy our community in and out of the classroom.  We invite you to take advantage of all of these opportunities.

Have a great week,
Catherine Frank

Poetry for Everyone: A No-Fail Poetry Workshop

Dates: Oct. 5, 2013       Times: 10 am - 4 pm
Instructor: Tina Barr      Fee: $55/person

Many of us are curious about poetry but afraid to write it; a poetry class can be fun, uplifting, and entertaining.  Most importantly, you will feel comfortable and encouraged in a non-judgmental environment.  This relaxing day-long workshop will offer exercises that will be both playful and creative. We will engage the five senses with a "food" poem, have fun with a tattoo poem, real or fake.  (I bring fake tattoos that go on with water).  We'll write poems on our favorite colors; we'll write an "ode" with reference to Pablo Neruda's ode on a watermelon.  We will share poems both comic and delightful, by poets Gerald Stern, Natasha Saje, Robert Hass and Billy Collins.  Join a warm and supportive group for a day of poetry. Participants should bring pen & paper.

Open to the public - OLLI membership not required to enroll.

Tina Barr (tinabarr3@gmail.com) won teaching awards from Rhodes College and Temple University.  She directed the Creative Writing Program at Rhodes College in Memphis before relocating to a cabin in Black Mountain with her husband.  She has published four poetry collections, all winners of publication awards, including a book of poems and 3 chapbooks.  Her poems have been published in The Harvard Review, The Paris Review, Poetry, Notre Dame Review, The Southern Review, and other journals and anthologies. For more information visit her website.

For more information, click here for a link to view the workshop description and more information.  Stop by the Center or call 828-251-6140 to register.
