Dear OLLI Members,

We look forward to welcoming everyone back to the Reuter Center as Fall 2013 College for Seniors courses begin.  We began the new term with a very successful New Member Welcome on Friday morning, September 13, filling the Manheimer Room with activity. Thanks to Ann Cowden and her committee for organizing the event, to Flo Byron and her calling committee for encouraging new members to attend, to OLLI Membership Committee chairs Kathleen Mainardi and Kathy Rouse for warming up the crowd and helping with every aspect of planning, and to OLLI Steering Council Chair Jim Lenburg for acting as Master of Ceremonies.  Be sure to look for butterfly stickers on name tags and make a special effort to welcome these new members to our community.

We have an impressive line up of courses and of special events for this fall.  Today you can hear UNC Asheville professor Dan Pierce lecturing on "Wilma Dykeman as Historian," the opening lecture in the six-part series that examines the impressive career of a versatile and groundbreaking local author. You can end the week by hearing a history of UNC Asheville from Dr. Kevan Frazier (who was the highlight of the opening day of Leadership Asheville 27) and a Symphony Talk with Asheville Symphony Orchestra Musical Director Daniel Meyer

There is still time to sign up for the Alzheimer's Walk (see information in this newsletter) and join with fellow OLLI members on September 21 in downtown Asheville to walk in support of an important cause.

Thanks for all you do to create an exemplary community of teachers and learners!

A Message from the Executive Committee
The launch of a new program year always dawns bright with promise: new course offerings, new instructors, the opportunity to renew associations with friends and colleagues from past sessions. As our steering council got together over the summer to launch this new year, we took a fresh look at our OLLI core values (Click here to see a complete list of Core Values developed as part of our 2012-2017 Strategic Plan.) We had a great, lively discussion. We agreed that the very first of our core values, "sense of community," is certainly one of our strengths. It's also one we can focus on making even better.

We invite you to consider with us how we can go about this. Our instructors work hard to ensure the classes are stimulating, creative, and fulfilling. Can we show more appreciation for the investment of time and talents of the instructors? Are there ways we can be more respectful of each other? How can we be more open to the views of others? Do we recognize that the members of our small staff stretch their talents every day to enhance our experiences here?

Please share your thoughts about enhancing community with us as the members of the Executive Committee. Let's keep the dialogue going.
