Saturday,

September 21, 9 am

Pack Square,

Downtown Asheville

Because we want to be part of the effort to know and understand more about Alzheimer's and related diseases, OLLI is excited about organizing OLLI members who will be participating in the Walk to End Alzheimer's on Saturday, September 21.

Dementia is not a specific disease. It's an overall term that describes a wide range of symptoms.  These symptoms are associated with a decline in memory or other thinking skills severe enough to reduce a person's ability to perform everyday activities.

Alzheimer's disease accounts for 60 to 80 percent of dementia cases.  Vascular dementia, which occurs after a stroke, is the second most common dementia type.

Registration for Asheville's Walk to End Alzheimer's begins at 9 am and the walk begins at 10 am at Pack Square in downtown Asheville.  We are hoping to register all OLLI members who want to participate in advance of the walk, so that it will be easy on the day to just show up.

Carol Gillen is the team captain and the team name is:  UNC Asheville OLLI.   Click here to visit the website where you can get the registration form to print and complete. Turn in the completed form and check (made out to The Alzheimer's Association of WNC) to the Reuter Center office.

All of the donations from OLLI members will be totaled and  turned in to the The Alzheimer's Association on the day of the walk.  Also, keep in mind that you can fill out the form, include a check, and indicate that you will not be doing the walk - in this way you can contribute whether you will be able to be there on the day or not.

If you have questions, you may contact Carol Gillen at 828-253-2282 or by email: carol@gillen.com.

"Venezuela After Chavez"
A lecture by Maria Moreno and Greg Clemons
Tuesday, September 3, 7 pm

C
ome to the Reuter Center for a fascinating lecture on "Venezuela after Chavez." Following Hugo Chavez' death this spring, chavezVenezuela has experienced an uneasy presidential succession. Chavez-era relationships with the Organization of American States and its oil diplomacy are uncertain.  Mars Hill College language department faculty members, Maria Moreno, who was born and educated in Mérida, Venezuela, is just returning from a summer trip "back home" and teams with her Spanish scholar colleague, Greg Clemons, to open our series on our Latin neighbor.

World Affairs Council (WAC) meetings offer fascinating lectures and panel discussions that aim to advance international awareness and foster Western North Carolina's global ties. OLLI members receive a discount on WAC annual membership fee.

ImpairedHearingSymbol The key to taking advantage of the
new hearing loop technology
now installed in Room 102 is a "T-coil" (or telecoil). This tiny element- -found in most hearing aids and all cochlear implants--picks up an invisible signal that brings the presenter's voice straight to you. Hearing-impaired listeners without aids or implants may borrow an equivalent headset from the OLLI office. The telecoil is an old invention, created to work with telephones-it still does. The recent development of magnetic hearing loops adds hugely to the T-coil's value, allowing it to sync hearing aids with microphones.

A T-coil in your hearing aid is your key to terrific hearing in the Reuter Center's Manheimer Room, beginning with events this fall. Check now to ensure that you have a telecoil (T-coil) in your hearing aid. Talk to your audiologist, if necessary, and be ready to access this great new/old technology! Hearing loops are becoming the new standard in America for enhanced hearing in auditoria, houses of worship, and assembly halls. The Manheimer Room in the Reuter Center is among the first spaces in  Asheville to be fitted with a hearing loop!
