Walk to End Alzheimer's'

Saturday,

September 21,

9 am

Pack Place,

Downtown Asheville

For the second year in a row, OLLI at UNC Asheville is encouraging OLLI members to participate in the Walk to End Alzheimer's.
This is a community-wide event to be held Saturday, Sept. 21, beginning at  9 am in Pack Square in downtown Asheville.  The easy walk is about two miles long around the downtown area and is a family event for all ages and abilities.

We hope to register all who want to participate ahead of the walk, so that it will be easy on the day to just show up.  Carol Gillen of the OLLI Marketing Committee is the team captain and our team name is:  UNC Asheville OLLI.  Click here to get the registration form which can be printed and filled out.

If you have questions, you may contact Carol Gillen at 828-253-2282 or by email: [email protected].
Dear OLLI Members,

To begin on a practical note, we want to let you know that parking decals are available in the OLLI office at the Reuter Center for the 2013-14 year. If you have already renewed your membership, please come by to fill out a form and pick up your decal.  Picking up your decal now will save your waiting in line on Thursday, August 15, when we will begin Fall 2013 registration. Remember that there is a $20 replacement fee for decals that are lost or damaged.

We hope that you like our revised newsletter layout and our colorful fall catalog cover.  Many thanks to
Kirk Borland and Judy LaMee, of our volunteer marketing committee, and Kata Bates and Brittany Turner of Twang Creative for their efforts to make our "look" reflect the excellence of our programming.

We are also happy to report that work has begun to install new carpeting and a "hearing loop" in the Manheimer Room.  This assistive listening system will allow members and visitors with hearing aids equipped with t-coils to hear more clearly our speakers and instructors who use a microphone. We will also have headsets available for those who need hearing assistance but do not have hearing aids with t-coils.  We had a team of hearing advocates led by Ann Karson and Melinda Stuart, who promoted the value of this project and who continue to make sure that all of our speakers and instructors create an environment that allows full participation by those who have hearing loss or difficulty.

It's a privilege to work with members who have such good ideas and work to make them into reality.

Catherine Frank
Executive Director

The World Affairs Council of Western North Carolina presents

"Venezuela After Chavez"
A lecture by Maria Moreno and Greg Clemons
Tuesday, September 3
7-9 pm
The Manheimer Room, The Reuter Center
chavezOn Tuesday, September 3, 7pm, come to the Reuter Center for a fascinating lecture on "Venezuela after Chavez." Following Hugo Chavez' death this spring, Venezuela has experienced an uneasy presidential succession. Chavez-era relationships with the Organization of American States and its oil diplomacy are uncertain.  Mars Hill College language department faculty members, Maria Moreno, who was born and educated in Mrida, Venezuela, is just returning from a summer trip "back home" and teams with her Spanish scholar colleague, Greg Clemons, to open our series on our Latin neighbor.

The World Affairs Council (WAC) meetings offer fascinating lectures and panel discussions that aim to advance international awareness and foster Western North Carolina's global ties. OLLI members receive a discount on WAC annual membership fee. The upcoming line up of topics include:
October 1: "Attack of the Drones--Revolution or Evolution in Warfare?"
November 5: "Egypt in the Morsi Era"
December 3: "Africa - A Hopeful Continent"
