Dear OLLI Members,

OLLI Steering Council chair Jim Lenburg, College for Seniors director Susan Poole, College for Seniors co-chair Gail Sobel, and I have just returned from the 2013 Southern Conference for Lifelong Learning in Athens, Georgia, full of good ideas for ways to enhance our programs and also with a renewed sense of pride in the many ways our programs represent best practices in programs for older adults.

We will host the annual regional meeting here at the Reuter Center, Wednesday, July 30 through Friday, August 1, 2014. Our friends and colleagues from OLLI at Duke University, the Encore program at NC State University, and OLLI at UNC Wilmington will be helping us with programming and finding sponsorships.  We will be calling on our members throughout the year for help with planning and programming for this meeting that will attract around 200 people from across the region. We are excited to showcase our community of teachers and learners. Let me know if you have any ideas for ways to welcome lifelong learners to UNC Asheville.

Be sure to read John Hammond's story about Dick Murray in this newsletter. Dick has served on many different committees and will continue to promote new ideas through his involvement with the mentoring program that he has worked hard to create.  Thanks to Dick for the many ways that he has improved our organization and for the ways that he has served as a mentor to many of our Steering Council leaders.

Finally, today's concert at 3 pm in the Manheimer Room, by Tom and Alice, traditional music performers, is the final performance in the Appalachian Studies Summer Music Series.  While all tickets have been spoken for, we will again open the doors at  2:45 pm so that we can fill all available seats. Many thanks to CFS director Susan Poole and Appalachian Studies co-chairs Susan Grabel and Carol Taylor for their creativity and persistence in masterminding this series.

Have a great week, and please let me know if you have questions, suggestions, or concerns.

  T-COIL + HEARING LOOP =
BETTER HEARING AT OLLI!

The key to taking advantage of the new hearing loop technology being installed in the Manheimer Room (Room 102) duriImpairedHearingSymbolng August is a "T-coil" (or telecoil). This tiny element--found in most hearing aids (and all cochlear implants)--picks up an invisible signal that brings the presenter's voice straight from the microphone to you. Hearing-impaired listeners without aids or implants, may borrow a headset from the OLLI office that will allow them to take advantage of the new technology. Our system debuts in September!

The telecoil is an old invention, created to work with telephones. The recent development of magnetic hearing loops adds to the T-coil's value, allowing it to synch hearing aids with microphones. A T-coil in your hearing aid is your key to terrific hearing in the Manheimer Room, come fall.

Check now to ensure that you have a telecoil (T-coil) in your hearing aid. Talk to your audiologist, if necessary, and be ready to access this great new/old technology!

Hearing loops are becoming the new standard in America for enhanced hearing in auditoria, houses of worship, and assembly halls. The Reuter Center will be among the first spaces in Asheville to be fitted with a hearing loop!

It Takes a Village: Transforming Neighborhoods into Resilient Communities

 Saturday, July 27,
9 am-4 pm
Land of Sky Regional Center
379 New Leicester Highway
Asheville, NC
 Fee $99 at the door.
Includes lunch & materials

The need for us all to "live locally" in resilient, caring communities is urgent - for the economy, environment, youth, families, and all those that want to "age in place" - and now it is very do-able. Resilient communities convert existing neighborhoods (where people mostly don't know one another) into true, collaborative communities.  This workshop will be co-facilitated by Gaya Erlandson - long-time advocate of community, facilitator of Dynamic Governance, and OLLI member, and Dan Duncan, expert in Asset Based Community Development, joining us from Austin, Texas.

To register or find out more, please go to: click here to view Dan Duncan's website. It will be the 2nd workshop listed. (You can register for both if you like! The first one is more for potential funders.)

Murray
Meet OLLI's "Mad Man" - Dick Murray

Dick and Vinton Murray with dog Maverick
Dick and Vinton Murray with their dog Maverick

By John Hammond

Dick Murray and his wife Vinton relocated to Asheville from Dallas in 2004 after he completed a successful career in marketing and advertising, primarily in the role of account manager wherein he represented the offerings of the firm to client organizations. Prior to moving to Texas, Dick worked in New York for 26 years, at least once on Madison Avenue. Regarding the Mad Men TV show about Madison Avenue advertising in the 1960's, Dick notes that the culture of smoking and drinking is correctly portrayed. He thinks some of the story lines are a little far-fetched though. He also says, "If all of that sex was going on then, I was never invited."

Mad Men aside, Dick's experience in the advertising business prepared him well for the challenges that he found here in Asheville when he became involved with the North Carolina Center for Creative Retirement (NCCCR) at UNC Asheville. In 2005, Dick enrolled in Leadership Asheville Seniors (LAS), liked the program and happened to link up with then assistant director Denise Snodgrass, who encouraged him to get involved in the initiatives of NCCCR. And he certainly has gotten involved!

Dick's first foray in November 2005 was to the Marketing Committee where he met Mike Sena, another veteran of New York marketing and advertising environs. As one might expect, Mike and Dick struck up a great relationship with each other as Dick progressed from the Marketing Committee to the Planning Committee to the Center Steering Council where he succeeded Mike as Chair.

While Dick chaired the Planning Committee, that group created a strategic plan which formed the basis for today's plan for OLLI. In 2006, Dick and Mike brought their advertising and marketing background to bear in achieving group consensus on a theme to be used to "brand" NCCCR for the future. The theme still inspires today: "Helping people thrive in life's second half." Dick feels that "this was one of the most significant branding initiatives that I have participated in over more than forty years of his marketing and advertising career." We couldn't agree more!

Dick has three adult children, two sons and a daughter. He enjoys spending time with them as well as playing golf and traveling. He has served on the board of the Lake Logan Resort and Conference Center located near Canton, NC, including two years as president. Dick is also on the Standing Committee of the Episcopal Diocese. Now that he has wrapped up his term on the OLLI Steering Council, he is currently working with Jim Lenburg and members of the UNC Asheville administration to establish a mentoring project to tap into the experiences of OLLI members to counsel a small group of undergraduate students regarding career decisions in select fields. He is also looking forward to taking a few more courses at OLLI's College for Seniors and serving on a few less committees. The "Mad Man" has earned a rest!

 How Our Irrational Decisions

Affect Economic Behavior--

To Our Detriment

A presentation by Phil Brown

Friday, August 2, 1:30 pm

Reuter Center Room 206

Phil Brown, who recently retired as a securities litigation attorney and just taught a popular class at the College for Seniors, will be our guest. He will discuss an aspect of behavioral economics which uses economic and psychological analysis to identify consistently irrational human economic behavior. Through experiments and discussion, he will explore several ways in which humans irrationally analyze economic issues and make irrational economic decisions to their financial detriment.

Open to all OLLI members
