Dear OLLI Members,      Thanks to Jeanne Smolkin and her crew of helpers who this past Thursday prepared the food and served up a wonderful barbecue to celebrate our new membership year.  Putting on a spread like this takes planning and hours of preparation, but Jeanne and her group make everything look easy. Thanks so much to everyone who came out to celebrate our community.   Thanks to Susan Poole, Carol Taylor and Susan Grabel and the members of the College for Seniors Appalachian Studies Committee who have put together the Appalachian Music Series.  Last week's performance of contemporary and traditional bluegrass music by Buncombe Turnpike was a great success and today's (Sunday, July 21) 3 pm performance of Celtic music by John Doyle will be a unique opportunity to hear a world-class performer.  All tickets for the performance have been distributed, but at 2:45 pm we will open the doors to fill any open seats.   Finally, please note that we still have openings in our Leadership Asheville Seniors program that will run on Wednesdays, September 11 through November 6, 8:30 am - 3:30 pm each session.  This program offers a unique opportunity to meet the movers and shakers and get a sense of the workings of our community, for those who have just arrived or those who have lived in Asheville a long time.  Please note that the deadline for applying for scholarships for the program is July 25.       Catherine Frank        Executive Director     |

 | It Takes a Village: Transforming Neighborhoods into  Resilient Communities    Saturday, July 27, 9 am-4 pm   Land of Sky Regional Center,  379 New Leicester Hwy, Asheville, NC
Fee $89 if participants register by  Monday, July 22  (or $55 each if 5 or more register from the same neighborhood),  or $99 at the door.  Includes lunch & materials.   The need for us all to "live locally" in resilient, caring communities is urgent - for the economy, environment, youth, families, and all those that want to "age in place" - and now it is very do-able. For the first-time ever, anywhere, the Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) model is being combined with the governance structure and decision-making process known as Sociocracy or Dynamic Governance (DG) and the focus is on working with people right where they live. It's about converting existing neighborhoods (where people mostly don't know one another) into true, collaborative communities.     If you are interested in having your neighborhood or other local neighborhoods transformed - or just want to know what this new movement is all about, please register today. This workshop will be co-facilitated by Gaya Erlandson - long-time advocate of community and facilitator of DG, and Dan Duncan, expert in ABCD, coming here from Austin, Texas.   Please go to: www.hdanielsduncanconsulting.org  - it will be the 2nd workshop listed there (You can register for both if you like! The first one is more for potential funders). You also are welcome to contact Gaya Erlandson at: cocreating@charter.net or by calling: 828-581-9036.     | | |
