Upcoming Schedule of Events
July 14-20, 2013

Dear OLLI Members,

While you may be tempted to curl up at home during the Asheville Monsoon Summer of 2013, we urge you to take advantage of many different events this week that represent the vibrant OLLI community.

This afternoon, Sunday, July 14 at 3 pm, the College for Seniors will begin this summer's Appalachian Studies Music Series with a performance of traditional and contemporary bluegrass music by Buncombe Turnpike.  The series will continue next week with Celtic music by John Doyle.  We have distributed all tickets for the series, but at 2:45 pm we will open the doors so that folks can fill all empty seats.

On Monday, July 15, at 4 pm, Dr. John Stewart will talk to us about the issue of domestic violence and the work of Helpmate to try to address this problem in Western North Carolina.

On Wednesday, July 17, 11:30 am, you can enjoy OLLI member RoseLynn Katz in a one-woman show "A Visit with Golda Meir," a presentation of the Asheville Storytelling Circle.

On Thursday, July 18 at 4:30 pm, plan to come to meet your friends, enjoy good food and drink, and renew your OLLI membership for 2013-14 at the Membership Roundup Barbecue.  This event is open to all OLLI members. The Party Planners, led by Jeanne Smolkin, are still looking for volunteers to help with set up and clean up for this festive event.  Helping at OLLI is a great way to get to know people and sustain our community.  Contact Jeanne at jsmolkin@gmail.com if you can help.

On Saturday, July 20, 10:30 am, in the Rhino Courtyard at Pack Place, enjoy "Stories from Children: Welcome to Our World," part of the Stories on Asheville's Front Porch series organized by OLLI member Sarah Larson.

Thanks to all of you for your interest in OLLI and for all that you do to make our community such a vital representation of creative retirement.

Curriculum Committee seeks two new members for Personal Development Topic Group

The Curriculum Committee topic group in charge of courses that fall into the Personal Development category is seeking two new members to begin immediately. The topic group is seeking enthusiastic individuals to assist with reviewing course proposals, brainstorming new course ideas, and finding and interviewing new instructors for courses dealing with a wide range of subject areas including cooking, interpersonal relations,  assertiveness training, gardening, genealogy, travel, wine appreciation and a lot more.

The group has four quarterly planning and assessment meetings and up to eight interview sessions with potential instructors each year, with meeting being scheduled well in advance to accommodate members' busy schedules.  This is fun, challenging and very important work.  The group is seeking individuals who are conscientious and take this role seriously.  Members need to be self-starters, able to work in a team and follow through on tasks and assignments. While no previous experience is required, members must have taken CFS courses.

Better Hearing is Coming to the Reuter Center!

Hearing enhancement is coming to Room 102 this fall in tImpairedHearingSymbolhe form of a hearing loop, a wireless system that brings a microphone's signal straight to your hearing aid (or special headset). Pickup is via the small telecoil (T-coil) device inside a hearing aid. Most aids have them, or they can be added.

Now is the time to check with your audiologist to make sure you have a T-coil, that it is enabled, and that you know how to activate it.

Tell your friends about this enhancement to lifelong learning at OLLI! It's just one more reason to attend classes, meetings, performances, and conferences in the Manheimer Room!

Click her for more on understanding telecoils.

I Land

The group invites the audience to spend an evening on an island far from their daily lives, yet mysteriously inhabited by their inner lives. Beginning with a conversation with the audience, this meticulously crafted performance event investigates the evolution of our imaginations as Anonymous Ensemble leads us on odyssey into an uncharted terrain of commonplace fantasies and wildly improbable realities.

Performances run from July 18-21, with an "Over 60/Under 30" discount ticket price of $15.
