Upcoming Schedule of Events
May 12-18, 2013

Dear OLLI Members,

We hope you have all received your catalogs for the Summer 2013 term and that you are eagerly anticipating the lineup of special events, Life Transition courses, and College for Seniors courses planned for this summer.  The College for Seniors is offering more courses this summer than they ever have.  The Appalachian Studies group has also planned a summer music series for July, so mark your calendars.  If you haven't received your catalog, please click here to read a PDF version of the catalog. If you would like to find out more about teaching for the College for Seniors, please come tomorrow afternoon, Monday, May 13, 4:30 pm, for the Volunteer to Teach session sponsored by the College for Seniors curriculum subcommittee.  Members of the committee will be available to talk more about your ideas for courses and to talk about putting together a course for our community of learners. Contact Anne Mock ([email protected]) for more information or to register.

We have also opened registration for Leadership Asheville Seniors, a unique course that allows participants to learn more about our community, whether they have lived here for years or have just moved here.  Participants visit unique venues and meet the movers and shakers in our community.  Many people call the course "life changing" because over the course of nine weeks they have the opportunity to build friendships with other people interested in knowing more about our community. Contact Laurel Jernigan ([email protected]) to learn more or to enroll.

While we have many opportunities for serious learning at OLLI, we always want to have fun.  The Reuter Center Singers performance this Friday, May 17, 7 pm in the Manheimer Room at the Reuter Center will give us all the opportunity to "Rewind to the '50s" and enjoy the music of the era.  We anticipate standing room only, so come early. Donations are always welcomed by this group that epitomizes creative retirement and successful aging.

Have a great week,

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

HALL FLETCHER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Tuesday and/or Thursday evenings 6-8 pm

School Volunteers

Hall Fletcher Elementary and
AB Tech are partnering to offer hands-on English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction to parents. In addition to English skills, students  are learning horticulture, nutrition,  food preservation, and food safety, with Hall Fletcher Elementary's School Garden serving as  the center piece.

Our goal for the  program is to enhance the lives of  families by helping the parents learn English, work, and nutritional skills  and become more involved in their  local school and community.

Given  the incredible turnout we've had from  parents, volunteers are needed to  serve as Conversation/ Garden  Partners!

Volunteers give ESL  parents the opportunity to not only  practice their English, but also  develop relationships with native-speakers.

Classes run on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, 6-8 pm and  will continue through the summer.   We are looking for volunteers who  can commit to at least one evening  per week.

Whether you are interested in  working with our ESL community or  simply love gardening, we'd love to  have you join in for this great cross- cultural experience!

MRIUnderstanding Medical Imaging Technology Lecture

On Tuesday, May 14, 6 pm,Perry Sprawls  Perry Sprawls, PhD, Distinguished Emeritus Professor, Radiology, Emory University School of Medicine, will speak on medical imaging technology.  Medical imaging (radiology) uses a variety of modern "high-tech" methods for detecting diseases, making diagnoses, and guiding treatment procedures. These include digital radiography and mammography, computed tomography (the "CAT" scan), MRI, PET, and other procedures using radioactive compounds, fluoroscopy and ultrasound. Each of these procedures provides a different "view" of the interior structures and functions of the human body. Physicians can choose which procedure is appropriate for a patient depending on symptoms, potential or confirmed diseases, and other clinical information that is needed.

In this program we will be taking a "Fantastic Voyage" through the human body using images from each of the many methods.  The principles of each method will be illustrated to show how images are produced and how the different methods compare.  A special interest of Dr. Sprawls is helping all of us understand the science and technology in our lives today through his courses for non-medical professionals.

The lecture is scheduled in the Manheimer Room at the Reuter Center and is free and open to the public.

HEARING WELL AT OLLI / REUTER CENTER ImpairedHearingSymbol

Did you know that OLLI has a Hearing Advocates group? We are active on many fronts related to hearing and general acoustics at the Reuter Center.

We are especially interested in issues that affect the hard of hearing among us, those who wear hearing aids and those who do not. One third of of all Americans over 60, and two thirds of those over 70, suffer some degree of hearing loss; these numbers include many at OLLI.

WE ARE SEEKING NEW MEMBERS!  We meet once a month to discuss ideas and develop recommendations for the improvement of hearing, especially in the classrooms at Reuter Center.

We seek to educate OLLI members through public notices (e-newsletters and bulletin boards), occasional special displays, and personal encounters.

If you can join us, please email one of our current members or speak to us personally:
