Dear OLLI Members, We had a festive celebration of our College for Seniors instructors on Friday afternoon. We ask you to join us throughout the year to express your thanks to the hundreds of instructors who donate their time, talent, and passion to provide us with intellectual stimulation and a sense of community. We also celebrate the contributions of the dozens of members of the Curriculum Subcommittee who persuade people to share their interests (special thanks to chairs Maryann Jones and Sheila Murphy), the members of the Faculty Support Subcommittee who shepherd and support our faculty (under the leadership of Dave Castel and Paula Withrow), the members of the Appalachian Studies Subcommittee (under the leadership of Susan Grabel and Carol Taylor) who organize courses to enlighten us about the wonders of our region and this year will convene a Summer Music Series that will take place this July. Special thanks to members of the College for Seniors Committee under the leadership of Sandra Brown and Charlotte Moore. And of course thanks to the leadership and support of College for Seniors Director Susan Poole and program support person Anne Mock. We appreciate Chancellor Ponder coming at a very busy time of year to express her thanks and understanding of all that College for Seniors and OLLI bring to UNC Asheville and the larger community. The programs on offer at OLLI just keep getting better. We will send out the link to our Summer 2013 catalog on Friday, May 10, sometime in the late afternoon. Registration will take place Tuesday, May 21. Registration is also open now for Leadership Asheville Seniors 27, which will take place on Wednesdays from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm from September 11 through November 6. This program offers the opportunity to meet the "movers and shakers" in our community, to visit a variety of venues not always open to the public, and to get to know other OLLI members who are interested in getting engaged in the community. Whether you have lived here for years or are new to the community, Leadership Asheville Seniors is an unprecedented way to learn about Asheville. Please contact Laurel Jernigan (ljerniga@unca.edu) to find out more or to register. Remember that we need people to serve in many capacities right here at OLLI to make all of our programs possible. We all work together to allow OLLI at UNC Asheville and all of our programs continue to evolve and improve. If you would like to be more involved in any way, please let me know by responding to this email. Have a great week, Catherine Frank Executive Director |

Saturday, June 1,
8 am - 5 pm
The Western North Carolina Historical Association (WNCHA) Discovery Tour to the Town of Marshall on the French Broad River will explore the history, architecture, and revitalization of a unique Madison County river town. Marshall is named after Chief Supreme Court Justice John Marshall.
We will depart the Smith-McDowell House at 8 am and return to Asheville at 5 pm. Our guide in Marshall will be native bard and preservationist Joe Penland. The tour will include visiting a Richard Sharp Smith architectural landmark, the Madison County Courthouse. We will see the former Marshall High School on Blannerhasset Island, and the Marshall House Bed and Breakfast. We will visit and view the old Madison County Jail, historic churches, the river stone architecture area, the Madison County Arts Center and the Colonel Lawrence Allen House that played a part in the Shelton Laurel Massacre during the Civil War. Stops will be made at exciting new shops along the Street. Lunch will be enjoyed at the ZUMA Coffee Shop.
Spaces on the tour are limited, so make your reservations today.
