Upcoming Schedule of Events
April 21-27, 2013

Dear OLLI members,

We are excited to be hosting the first OLLI Art Bazaar this Friday, April 26, from 11 am to 6 pm in the Manheimer Room.  40 OLLI members will display and sell work that represents many diverse areas of craft and art. Many thanks to Beth Johnson (who will display her jewelry) for creating this idea and to Leanna Preston for nurturing the project to completion.  It's worth noting that there was a modest entry fee to participate and most of the money will be donated for OLLI program scholarships.  Please come to support these creative retirees.

If you want to support the seriously creative undergraduates on our campus, you should also attend The UNC Asheville Student Art Sale will take place on April 26 and 27 in the S. Tucker Cooke Gallery in Owen Hall from 4-7 pm on Friday, April 26 and 10 am - 7 pm on Saturday, April 27.  There are always interesting pottery, drawings, paintings, and prints for sale at great prices, and it is an inspiring opportunity to support students.

We hope that you will consider finding more about leadership at OLLI by attending the "Y'All Serve: Cultivating Leadership," Wednesday, May 1, 4:30 - 6 pm  in Room 206 of the Reuter Center.  OLLI succeeds because it is member-driven and member-led.  We know that our members are full of energy and great ideas, and we want to make sure that everyone has the opportunity and information to contribute to our ongoing success. And please see the request for members of the marketing committee in this newsletter if you want an opportunity to help with spreading the word about our programs.

Have a great week!

Asheville Living Treasures

Recognition Ceremony

Sunday, May 5, 1:30 pm

Reuter Center, Manheimer Room

The Selection Committee of Asheville Living Treasures is pleased to announce that the recipients of the Spring 2013 Asheville Living Treasures award have been chosen. Thelma Porter, Julia Ray and Hazel & John Robinson will be officially inducted at the Recognition Ceremony being held on Sunday, May 5 at 1:30 pm at the Reuter Center, home of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UNC Asheville.

Committee members - Matthew Bacoate, Roger Bargainnier, Rock Eblen, Carmen Ramos-Kennedy, Donna Schutt, Beverly Switzer, and Marnie Walsh invite all Asheville and greater Buncombe County residents to join in the celebration recognizing and thanking these amazing individuals for their contributions to the betterment of our community. The ceremony is free and open to the public.

This Year's Asheville's Living Treasures

Thelma Porter is a businesswoman, community Thelma Porter activist, philanthropist. She is known far and wide for her generosity. The number of people given a helping hand by Thelma is enormous. Her retail establishment provided for the needs of a then segregated African American community. She never turned someone away because they didn't have the money. Thelma was health conscious before it was fashionable. Once the Urban Renewal "writing was on the wall", her interest in health led to a long career at the YWCA. Thelma is 92 years old.

Julia Ray Julia Raywas integral to the racial integration and growth of the YWCA of Asheville.  She was part of a group of YW supporters called the YWCA Boosters. After the White and Black branches of the YWCA consolidated, new challenges regarding race emerged. Julia and the other members of the Booster Club provided support for operations; they also provided youth scholarships, organized trips and developed enrichment programs. While their initial purpose was to support the YWCA, over the years the Booster Club became a close-knit group of friends, Black and White. Julia was actively involved with Friends of the YMI and was on the committee that raised funds and implemented the first Goombay Fesitival. Julia is 97 years old.

Hazel & John Robinson have contributed to the lively arts scene in Asheville in unique ways.  In 1973, with Robinsons the fateful words from John "Why don't you do it?" ringing in her ears, Hazel started The Montford Park Players (MPP). With a small amount of money, a seemingly endless supply of energy, and more tenacity than a bulldog, the acting company was formed. Thousands of people have been introduced to Shakespeare through MPP. The Montford Park Players is now the longest running Shakespeare company in North Carolina. The contributions John and Hazel have given to the arts community in Asheville are pricelessJohn is 90 years old and Hazel is 87.
