2013 Sam Hill Lecture

Dear OLLI members,

We have just finished another Paths to Creative Retirement Weekend.  Participants come from all over the country to join together in facilitated conversations about the potential for finding satisfaction and adventure in the next phase of their lives.  OLLI members act as facilitators for the program and generously share their own experiences in making the transition from work to retirement.  Many thanks to Cindy Berryman-Fink, Anne Bonnyman, Nancy Bragg, Carol Culler, Chuck Fink, Babs Guardenier, Nick Jordan, Ken Macfarlane, Linda Macfarlane, Barry Mundt, and Ellen Nutter for giving so generously of their time, talent, and experience to make this program so compelling.  Congratulations to Laurel Jernigan for completing her first weekend as program director.  The workshop is a wonderful reminder of the talents of our members and the great asset we have in being able to call the Reuter Center our home.

If you have friends who are navigating this change themselves and could benefit from sharing wisdom with others on the same journey, our next program will take place over Labor Day weekend, August 30 - September 1. For more information, click here for more details on the Paths website. If you have friends who are considering relocation in retirement, our Creative Retirement Exploration Weekend (CREW) will take place on Memorial Day Weekend, May 24 - 26.  For more information, click here for the link to our CREW website.

To understand unique perspectives on aging, plan to join us on Tuesday, April 16, 6 pm for a conversation titled "The Global Longevity Revolution" with Dr. Ron Manheimer, founding director of the North Carolina Center for Creative Retirement, and Dr. Mariano Sanchez, sociology professor at the University of Granada, Spain,  an international expert on intergenerational relationships, currently doing his research at Penn State.  On Thursday, April 18, 7 pm, Rabbi Sheila Peltz Weinberg will offer a lecture titled "Aging with Awareness," sponsored by OLLI and The Center for Jewish Studies at UNC Asheville.  See more about both lectures in this newsletter.

Finally, the Steering Councils' slate of officers was affirmed through our online poll.  Officers for 2013-14 are Jim Lenburg, Chair; Judy LaMe, Vice Chair; Cindy Berryman-Fink, Past Chair; Matt Mengel, Secretary; Chuck Fink, Fred Teach, and Kathy Tempelaar-Lietz, elected members of the Nominating Committee.  We are grateful that they are all willing to serve.  If you would like to find out more about leadership opportunities within OLLI at UNC Asheville, plan to attend our "Y'All Serve" Leadership Recruitment Event on Wednesday, May 1, 4:15 pm at the Reuter Center.

Have a great week,

Present

AgingAwareness"Aging with Awareness"

Rabbi Sheila Peltz Weinberg

Thursday, April 18, 7 pm

Reuter Center, UNC Asheville

Free and Open to the Public

Rabbi Weinberg's talk will combine a reflection on the five hindrances encountered in meditation Sheila Weinberg practice that obscure the mind's ability to see clearly and how these same obscurations show up as one ages. The talk reveals the five hindrances in the Passover story as the impediments to freedom.  Once one has identified these "hindrances," one has a pathway toward their dissolution. One can see freedom, as do Jewish mystical sources, as both an internal psycho-spiritual reality as well as a socio-political one. Rabbi Weinberg will also share some of the work that she is involved in in the Jewish world to sustain and support "wise aging."

Survey
OLLI conducts a number of regular surveys. One is an annual member survey in order to understand and meet our members' needs. A second is among new members to learn who they are, why they joined, and how they learned about OLLI.

Further, we survey former members to identify their reasons for leaving, how they feel about OLLI, and whether they might re-join at a later date. The information from all of these on-going investigations, and from other ad hoc studies throughout the year, provide essential information which helps OLLI plan for the future.

Calling All Photographers!

Photography

OLLI needs your digital snapshots.  We have plans to assemble a collection of pictures celebrating the OLLI at UNC Asheville experience.   We would like to include a picture or two that you may have taken of an OLLI group, workshop, SIG, class, activity or event.  If you are willing to share an interesting picture or two, just send a fairly high resolution digital copy with brief caption telling the "who, what, where" of the picture to OLLI Marketing Committee member Kirk Borland at [email protected] .  We need quite a few photos to do the project right, so don't be shy.  Who knows, you could become famous!

GlobalOLLI offers a special presentation titled

 The Global Longevity Revolution

Tuesday April 16, 6 pm

The graying of the global population is creating historically unprecedented challenges to societies the world over. More generations are coexisting and interacting than ever before. This has dramatically altered relationships within families, communities, the work place, and in the halls of government. The arena of lifelong learning is no exception. What strategies might centers for lifelong learning embrace in this growing aging and multigenerational context?

Ron Manheimer  Hear University of Granada, Spain, sociology professor Mariano Sanchez, an international expert on intergenerational relationships, currently doing his research at Penn State University, in a dialogue with Dr. Ron Manheimer, former founding director of the NC Center for Creative Retirement (now OLLI at UNC Asheville).
Poetry
              Poetry Poetry Reading

Celebrate National Poetry Month with four of OLLI's poets
Ann Karson, Pat Harvey, Bill Petz, and Mike Ross
will read selections of their own poetry on
Wednesday, April 17, 4:30 pm

Reuter Center, Room 206

The reading is open to the public

Poetry has been called "an insurgent art," "beautiful and pointless," "the language of the imagination and the passions," and "a kind of ingenious nonsense." Whatever you think of poetry, whether you "get it" or not, these poets will evoke something of the heart and the head. Each poet, in his/her own style, reveals something of who they are and how they experience the world. You may hear new perspectives, experiences of beauty, reasons to laugh, unanswered questions and unquestioned answers. From their poetry readings you will know them better and perhaps our world as well.

A book sale and signing will follow the readings.
