Upcoming Schedule of Events
March 17-23, 2013

Dear OLLI members,

We have just one more week until College for Seniors courses begin on March 25.  If you have registered for Spring courses, on March 19 you will receive a copy of your schedule that will reflect adds and drops made since the initial registration period.  Remember that the deadline for a full refund for course registrations is Friday, March 22, 4 pm.

Whether you are a new member or someone who would like to find out more about ways to make the most of your experience at OLLI, please plan to come to the New Member Welcome on Friday, March 22 at 10 am.  We appreciate the work that Linda Bushar and the Membership Committee invest in making sure that everyone who joins OLLI can truly call the Reuter Center home. Please contact Laurel Jernigan (ljerniga@unca.edu) if you have any questions.

We still have spots open in our Hands On volunteer day in the garden at Hall Fletcher Elementary on March 23.  This activity is part of the Civic Engagement Committee's Call to Action addressing hunger and food insecurity in Western North Carolina and is a chance to get to know your fellow OLLI members and to make a positive difference in our community.  There are a variety of "jobs" available as part of this project, so that you don't have to be a gardener or carpenter to contribute and have a good time.  Contact Laurel Jernigan (ljerniga@unca.edu) for more information.

If you want to find out more about our organization, please mark your calendars and plan to attend the OLLI Town Hall Meeting on Thursday, March 28 at 4:15 pm.  We will talk about the Annual Member Survey, the financial state of OLLI, College for Seniors, and other developments and plans for all OLLI programs.

It's gratifying to see how much we have going on at OLLI and to recognize how many people, volunteers and staff, contribute to our success.  Many thanks for your interest in OLLI,

Catherine Frank

Executive Director

presented by Marilyn Kolton-Dwarshuis and Lou Dwarshuis

Reuter Center
Free and open to the public.

The March meeting of the Elisha Mitchell Audubon Society will focus on the essentials of birding. Leading us will be Marilyn Kolton-Dwarshuis and Lou Dwarshuis, Elisha Mitchell Audubon stalwarts and experienced birding instructors. Their talk will introduce beginners to the art and science of birding and also will serve as an early-spring refresher course for the more experienced birder. Marilyn and Lou's presentation will cover everything from the basics (how to use binoculars and field guides) to more esoteric issues like how to tell a warbler from a vireo and keys to birding by ear. You'll learn, or be refreshed on, such issues as what's a wing bar and an eyeline, the latest in binoculars and birding scopes, and birding hot-spots in the area.

Present

"Aging with Awareness"

Rabbi Sheila Peltz Weinberg

Thursday, April 18, 7 pm

Reuter Center, UNC Asheville

Free and Open to the Public

Sheila Weinberg Rabbi Weinberg's talk will combine a reflection on the five hindrances encountered in meditation practice that obscure the mind's ability to see clearly and how these same obscurations show up as one ages. The talk reveals the five hindrances in the Passover story as the impediments to freedom.  Once one has identified these "hindrances," one has a pathway toward their dissolution. One can see freedom, as do Jewish mystical sources, as both an internal-psycho-spiritual reality as well as a socio-political one. Rabbi Weinberg will also share some of the work that she is involved in in the Jewish world to sustain and support "wise aging."

Peltz Weinberg is a Reconstructionist rabbi, educator, and nationally recognized pioneer in contemplative practice, which combines eastern meditative practices with western religious thought. A co-founder of the Institute for Jewish Spirituality, she has published widely on feminism, Judaism, spirituality, and single parenting, and she has contributed commentaries to Kol HaNeshama, the Reconstructionist prayer book. Weinberg is the author of a memoir, Surprisingly Happy: An Atypical Religious Memoir,  which describes her remarkable life and spiritual quest in poetry, written prayers, and meditation practices, along with a candid examination of her own struggles with addiction, her philosophy of feminism and her ideas about family life and relationships.

Please join us for what promises to be an illuminating evening.  For more information, contact the Center for Jewish Studies at 828-232-5027  cjs.unca.edu

Slow Ears

Clear speech is important for all hearers, but especially  for those who are hard of hearing (HOH).

As we age, and particularly those of us with hearing  problems, we may develop "slow ears"-it takes us a little  longer to absorb what is being said to us.

Ear Listening Please practice clear speech!
Speak more slowly

Pause briefly in places so ears can catch up

Enunciate clearly without exaggerating

Be sure your face and mouth can be seen

Rephrase, but don't shout
