Upcoming Schedule of Events
February 10-16, 2013

Dear OLLI members,

February is shaping up as a very busy month at the Reuter Center, so we want to call your attention to a number of opportunities coming up this week, especially an address by Manna FoodBank Executive Director Cindy Threlkeld and our Member Social.

On Tuesday, February 12, 2:30 pm, in Room 206 of the Reuter Center, please plan to attend the kick-off event for the Civic Engagement Committee's Call to Action focusing on opportunities to understand the issues of hunger and food insecurity in Western North Carolina and to learn more about how you can be involved in hands-on and ongoing opportunities to use your talents to address this important issue.  You will hear directly from Cindy Threlkeld, Executive Director for Manna FoodBank about the scope of the issue in our region and will be able to talk to her and members of her staff about some engaging ongoing volunteer opportunities.  You may also sign up for an OLLI Hands-On Volunteer Day on February 20 from 9 am to 12 pm.  The Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) is also working with us on this effort to address the issue of food insecurity, so on Tuesday, February 19, 9:30 am, you can find out about a full range of volunteer opportunities to address the issue of hunger in our community.

Right after this event, join us for our Winter

Member Social on Tuesday, February 12 from 4:30 to 6:30 in the lower level of the Reuter Center.  Jeanne Smolkin and her crew of party planners always put on a great party. This is a great opportunity to meet other members and celebrate our community.

Our Spring 2013 Catalog will be mailed on Friday, February 15. The College for Seniors Curriculum Committee has come up with another powerful and intriguing calendar of courses, and we also have some new life transition programs that address important issues.  There are wonderful lectures organized for Fab Fridays and learning opportunities provided by our community partners.  Thanks to our staff and volunteers who collaborate to make all of these opportunities possible.

ear

Please Repeat the Question!

If you are hard-of-hearing and attend classes, lectures, or special presentations at OLLI, especially in rooms 102A or 206, you probably already know how difficult it is to grasp all the meaning in Q&A, especially if you didn't hear the question.

Although the microphone systems at OLLI's podiums work quite well, when used as directed, an adequate system for amplifying questions from the audience has not yet been put in place. OLLI's Hearing Advocacy group urges you to help us all by letting the speaker know if you cannot
hear!

Unless, and until, presenters are regularly reminded to REPEAT THE QUESTION, the habit will go unchanged, and some of us will remain only partly educated.

Raise your hand, stand and ask, wave a sign--whatever it takes to help make the point that improved audibility at OLLI  benefits everyone!

AppalachianPaws on a Mission

Since 1999, Paws On A Mission pet therapy program at Mission Hospital, has touched lives in our community through the healing power of pets.  More than 100 volunteers, both human and canine, spread smiles, comfort, and love to hospital patients of all ages.  Volunteers also work with children and youth in schools and community agencies to help them reach their full potential.

To participate, the dog team must be registered with Pet Partners (formerly Delta Society) or Therapy Dogs Incorporated.

Opportunities to get involved without a dog are also available.  "Leash-less" volunteers assist the dog teams by acting as a liaison with facility staff and the

participants receiving pet therapy.  Leash-less volunteers are currently needed at Mission Children's Outpatient Center.
