Upcoming Schedule of Events
February 3, 2013

Dear OLLI members,

Despite wintry weather to begin our day on Friday, February 1, we had a capacity crowd to hear a lecture by OLLI member and CFS instructor Richard Hansley's on Asheville's architecture, co-sponsored by the Asheville Women's History Club. The event is a wonderful reminder of the quality of our members and lecturers and the many ways that you can satisfy your intellectual curiosity at OLLI at UNC Asheville.

The weather on Friday reminds us to reiterate our adverse weather policy:

"OLLI classes, events, meetings, and other activities will be canceled or delayed when UNC Asheville classes are canceled or delayed for adverse weather.  OLLI members should consult the UNC Asheville website at www.unca.edu to receive the latest information regarding University Adverse Weather and Emergency Bulletins.  You may call the university Snow Line at 828-259-3050 or follow local media like WLOS TV 13 for reports of closings and delays. "  We will make every effort to post information on the OLLI phones and website as soon as we make a decision to close and to send an email to all members letting them know about our operations during bad weather.  We know, however, that conditions can vary dramatically across our region.  If conditions in your area seem hazardous, please stay home. Your instructor or fellow class members can help you catch up when you can make it back to class.  We also encourage our staff members to stay home if conditions are hazardous where they live, so even if the Reuter Center is open, we may not be operating at full capacity.  In making a decision about closing or opening, we try to balance potential hazards with our desire to maintain a consistent schedule.  Decisions are not always easy, but we try to keep everyone's interest in mind.

Our capacity crowd on Friday also reminds us that the new 66-space parking lot near the Reuter Center is now open.  We hope that this will help us manage almost all of our parking needs.  We encourage those of our members who can manage the short walk to add these extra steps to their routine so that there are plenty of spaces close to the Center for those who face challenges walking.

Thanks to all of you for the many ways you contribute to our community,

Catherine Frank

AdvancedAdvance Care Planning Workshop

Thursday, February 7,

3-5 pm

at the Reuter Center

The workshop will feature a panel whose members are experienced in addressing end-of-life issues. Discussion will include communicating your treatment wishes to loved ones and to medical personnel, ethical and legal issues, and the uses of advance directives.  Ample time will be reserved for questions. Assistance will be provided for anyone wishing to complete a legally valid advance directive, including the notarization required in North Carolina, using the Five Wishes format.

Preparation for you to do before the workshop:  Talk to your possible "power of attorney for healthcare," the person who would make health care decisions if you are unable. If you have Internet-access, print the sample Five Wishes brochure and study it and write down any questions you might have for the panel.

Great Smoky Mtns

Are you interested in the southern Appalachia-this endlessly fascinating region we live in? If so, you might want to join the College for Seniors Appalachian Studies Committee.

The committee's goal is to promote the study and enjoyment of the many facets of Appalachia--from music to literature, from history to foodways. We have offered three popular Appalachian Sampler courses (a fourth is in the works for Fall 2013), and we sponsored a successful Appalachian Authors series last July. We are also planning an Appalachian music series for this summer.

If you're interested in joining this committee, contact Carol Taylor, carolmctaylor@gmail.com, or Susan Grabel, skgrabel@yahoo.com, committee co-chairs.  We'll be happy to meet with you.
