Dear OLLI members,
This newsletter underscores the many talented people and programs available to us through our membership.
OLLI member and College for Seniors instructor Sarah Larson is the creative force behind Starbuck by Whalelight, a production to be offered beginning on November 29 at the Scottish Rite Masonic Temple downtown and relying on the talents of a number of OLLI members. This Friday at the Reuter Center you can attend a reading by OLLI members Perien Gray, Theo Sable, and Joan Weiner.
OLLI's Hearing Advocates reminds us that creativity includes not only theater and poetry but also finding new ways to address the challenges of aging, including hearing loss. Be sure to check out their resources for those experiencing the effects of hearing loss.
Finally, David Langdon's story on OLLI member and Elderhostel founding president Bill Berkeley reminds us of the great talent and experience that resides in our membership.
We will be sending out detailed instruction on registration tomorrow, including information about our research on the costs and requirements for online registration. Until then, enjoy the last of the holiday weekend and the people and events that make OLLI at UNC Asehville unique and inviting.

Bill Berkeley - A Leader In The National Lifelong Learning Movement by David Langdon
Early in his career (1975), Bill Berkeley got in on the ground floor of the "great idea" of lifelong learning in retirement as founding president of Elderhostel (now Road Scholar.) In fact, Bill was instrumental in coordinating the efforts of retirement learning through Elderhostel and its very early involvement with the "institute movement" back in the 1980s. It is our honor to have Bill as an active member of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at UNC Asheville. His participation reflects well on the value the OLLI programs deliver to the Asheville retirement community.
Originally started at the University of New Hampshire, the Elderhostel concept of retirement learning was based on running week-long classes taught by a college's prized faculty in a "mini-course" format while housing students in unoccupied dorms during college breaks. The conceptual founders of Elderhostel recognized Berkeley's skills with non-profits and invited him to become its first administrative leader and president, a position he held for 20 years.
Meanwhile, another movement involving retirement learning had begun at the New School for Social Research in New York in 1962. These programs encouraged retirement learning on college campuses and were very similar to today's lifelong learning institute (LLI) programs. Berkeley explained that in 1986, Elderhostel and the LLI programs combined efforts to coordinate lifelong learning, since both had similar missions. Elderhostel helped take the LLI movement from 15 or 20 campuses, mostly in the northeast, to over 100 institutes on campuses in every section of the country.
Duke University had one of the earliest programs in this discipline; the program began its life in 1977 as the Duke Institute for Learning in Retirement and in 2006 became the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Duke University. In 1987, the North Carolina General Assembly passed legislation funding the University of North Carolina Asheville to start its North Carolina Center for Creative Retirement, now known as Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UNC Asheville. OLLI at UNC Asheville stands at the forefront of the evolution of retirement learning programs in the country. Berkeley points to changes in retirement itself as the reason institutions and programs must change their retirement learning focus in the future.
Bill Berkeley and his wife, Karen, are both participating members of OLLI attending class and working with the OLLI community. Their two daughters and families now reside in North Carolina and shortly all may be residing in the Asheville area. Bill and Karen also have a vacation home in New Hampshire where they enjoy summering. He's also looking for an enjoyable game of tennis wherever they happen to reside.
Bill refers to the premise Dr. Marc Freeman presented in his recent lecture at OLLI when he described the new phases of life in retirement. Today's retirees haven't necessarily stopped working, certainly haven't stopped learning, and are more vibrant and active than previous generations. "We're looking forward to more active participation from Osher in leading the efforts of local institutes of this kind," Berkeley commented. OLLI leadership is open to change and appreciates the positive input that help us grow with the help of creative, forward thinkers like Bill Berkeley. | |
