An Eccentric Theory of Solar System Formation

Speaker: Dr. Sam Kaplan

Monday,  Nov. 12, 4:30 pm Reuter Center, Room 206

The classic model for how solar systems arise from stellar gasses predicts that other solar systems should look like ours - large gaseous outer planets, small rocky inner planets, with all going around the sun in roughly circular orbits.

Recent advances in astronomy have led to cataloging planets in other solar systems (exoplanets). These appear to have a wide range of eccentricities, from elongated ellipses to circular orbits.

This fact has required astronomers (and mathematicians) to reexamine the standard model for solar system formation to address the many non-circular orbits that abound.
