Low MagicA solo exhibition of new work by artist Luke KnoxAugust 1 - 30, 2013Closing reception: Thursday, August 29, 2013The work of Luke Knox examines the historical presence of animal mythologies and iconography in contemporary human culture. Knox observes cultural tropes that indicate humankind's surviving adoration for the natural universe and the animal image. Knox is interested in the emergence of these myths and phenomena and how they manifest and evolve within a society that has largely devalued the role of nature in everyday life. Animal depictions and archetypal roles presented in classical fables, alchemical literature and contemporary iconography inform his conceptual and aesthetic approach. Inert materials such as manufactured concrete rubble, baling wire, and plastic artificial flowers are utilized to create animal forms- an approach that addresses the often -disjunctive realms of natural and built environments. The creatures emerging from this conceptual and material amalgamation function as indices of the historical, mythological, and technological world in which we exist. By revisiting historical animal myths and images today, Knox hopes to reanimate a visual space that is synthetic by its very nature. | Works by Luke Knox |
