A note for early educators

Dear Teachers & Providers,

There are lots of things that I want to tell you about my library. In fact, helping you get information and materials is my entire purpose. Plus, librarians love lists. It is a proven fact!

1)      Kids need to play with books. Sometimes they damage them- it is true. As long as you are talking to them about proper care of books, and supervising them when they use them (to the extent possible) I promise, I will not scold you when one comes back torn. If something like this happens in your classroom, come and talk to me (the children's librarian) directly. I will negotiate with circulation for you!

2)      Librarians can be flexible. For example, I give childcare facilities, the Boys and Girls club and schools in Garden City and the surrounding area a special library card that does not accrue fines, damages and lost item charges. All I ask is that teachers use "good faith" and try to keep the materials in good order. Each library has its own policies, but it never hurts to ask!

3)      We have more than you might imagine! We have databases and kits full of educational toys too! I have a loose check in policy on my toys- if families or schools return MOST of the items, and I can tell they tried to keep it together and in good condition, I forgive small losses. I know that it is nearly impossible to keep all the pieces in one place. I want these items to be USED.

4)      Bring kids to the Library! I know that kids shout out when they love a story- it is how they show that they are engaged! All I ask is that they behave as well as they can, at their age (or developmental level). As long as they are engaged in a library activity- using the computers, reading a book, playing with our toys.. all is well.

5)      Use me as a resource! If you email me (or your local librarian) we will be thrilled to find books that meet your needs. We can help you- whether it is on finding new strategies for classroom management, finding resources for a particular lesson or anything else you can dream up. Librarians generally love a challenge!

Sincerely.. your local librarian,

Kate

Katy Gerard makes IdahoSTARS scholarship history

Katy Gerard has made history as the first IdahoSTARS scholar to complete a bachelor degree in Early Childhood Education Bachelor of Arts from Idaho State University. She received her degree in May 2013. Katy is currently employed at the ISU Early Learning Center in Pocatello. IdahoAEYC began awarding scholarships in 1999, but only started awarding IdahoSTARS scholarships for bachelor degree coursework in 2005. From September 16 - October 18, 2013 scarecrows can be found peeping out around the trees and shrubs welcoming guests to the Idaho Botanical Garden for the Sixth Annual Scarecrow Stroll! Idaho AEYC has created a "Barrel of Monkeys" scarecrow for this year's Scarecrow Challenge at the Gardens. Our scarecrow will be found among scarecrows of other businesses, non-profits, and community organizations. The Sixth Annual Scarecrow Stroll welcomes all members and guests of all ages to come view and vote for their favorite scarecrow in this year's contest. Improving educational outcomes from the early years

Idaho AEYC is now a member of the Idahoans for Excellence in Education Coalition. We believe that we can improve students' outcomes by improving their early learning opportunities at home, in child care, or in preschool. Idahoans for Excellence in Education is a diverse coalition formed to support the successful implementation of the Idaho Core Standards, a set of academic standards that students in the various grade levels in Idaho are expected to achieve.  The coalition is made up of business, education and technology organizations.

Idaho AEYC is a member of Idahoans for Excellence in Education because we believe in their goal of supporting parents, policy makers, and the general public with credible and accurate information about the positive impact that the Idaho Core Standards will bring to the state's education system.  The group believes that Idaho Core Standards will provide students opportunities for deeper understanding of coursework and will lead to better prepared students with critical thinking skills.  To learn more about those involved in Idahoans for Excellence in Education and the Core Coalition please visit the Idaho Business for Education website

Idaho AEYC partners with Don't Fail Idaho

The first years of life are a remarkable time for child development. These years lay the foundation for subsequent learning and growth. At Idaho AEYC we want all children to thrive in the first years of life be it at home, in childcare or in the classroom.

To make this possible, education should be a priority in Idaho-the top priority. Idaho AEYC is partnering with Don't Fail Idaho and a diverse group of other Idaho organizations to spread awareness about the importance of education to our state's future.

Don't Fail Idaho is a movement bringing Idahoans together to improve education. The Don't Fail Idaho Campaign seeks to provide the information and resources so those who have a stake in the future of Idaho education can access the proper tools to have meaningful conversations and make informed decisions.  With the collaborative voices and efforts of parents, educators, legislators and businesses, real change can happen. Together, we can continue Idaho AEYC's mission of creating a place where all Idaho children are able to thrive.

The Don't Fail Idaho website has a host of informative articles, data and thought-provoking material from education resources around the country. Please take a moment to visit the Don't Fail Idaho website (www.dontfailidaho.org), sign up for the Don't Fail Idaho monthly e-newsletter or get connected through Facebook and Twitter
