Spring 2013
Early Learning News
A Note from Beth

Dear Friends,

Knowing that quality early childhood programs help build the foundation for our youngest children to succeed in school and life, we are thankful that early childhood has been receiving increased attention on the local and national level. The President's initiative to enhance and develop access to quality early childhood programs throughout the country speaks to the fact that we are ready to stop talking about and take action to improve our children's educational and social outcomes.  While we do not know what this specifically means for Idaho, Idaho AEYC is committed to take part in these discussions and continue to advocate for support on this historic initiative.

Collaborative efforts are the key to moving the dial in early childhood and Idaho AEYC has been at the forefront in many of these efforts. We are currently working with several partners to help advance the profession of early childhood and continue to improve the quality of early childhood programs throughout Idaho.

This summer Idaho AEYC will once again recognize leaders in our communities that have made a significant impact in early childhood throughout Idaho. The "Stick Your Neck Out for Idaho's Children" event will be held on August 8, 2013 at Zoo Boise. We look forward to seeing you at this event as we honor these amazing individuals.

As always, thank you for your commitment to help Idaho AEYC advance the early learning profession and advocate for all children and families in Idaho.  Our vision to see that all children thrive and have the opportunities to succeed in school and life could not be more important. Simply said, we cannot do it alone. Thank you for your support and we look forward to seeing you on August 8th.

All the best,

Beth Oppenheimer

Stick Your Neck Out for Idaho's Children

Throughout our state, there are amazing individuals who stick their necks out everyday for Idaho's children. From providing quality early care for children to working tirelessly to raise awareness about the importance of early education, these individuals selflessly dedicate their personal time and professional careers to the field of early care and education. The Stick Your Neck Out for Idaho's Children Awards is a time to honor some of these children's champions.

We are pleased to honor four amazing individuals for their strong commitments to quality early care and education through positive impacts to the field throughout Idaho. We hope that you will join us on August 8th at Zoo Boise to honor this year's nominees.

The IdahoSTARS Project Increases Participation Rate by 25%

The IdahoSTARS Project is undergoing exciting program changes!  In January, we released new eligibility requirements to increase the opportunity for more early care and education providers to join the IdahoSTARS Professional Development Registry System and receive financial incentives to support ongoing professional development.  By doing so, the IdahoSTARS Project has increased provider participation by 25% in the first half of 2013. This summer the project will roll out a revised Quality Rating and Improvement System.

We are excited to share this new system and invite more early care and education programs to participate and engage in quality improvements.

Idaho AEYC highighted at the Ed Sessions 2.0

For any parents whose children have an interest in their Smartphone or tablet, the app marketplace can be overwhelming.  How is a parent supposed to know which apps, games, or other media are appropriate for their children and which will have educational value? Enter Sesame Street.

The Ed Sessions 2.0 welcomed Mindy Brooks, Director of Education and Research at Sesame Workshop to the May luncheon benefiting Idaho AEYC.  Brooks is part of the educational research team that studies children (up to age 8) to develop digital content for the little learners. The Ed Sessions 2.0 is a statewide forum for dialogue regarding Idaho's educational issues and innovative responses to many of the challenges we currently face. We were so honored to be involved in this exciting opportunity and are working hard to promote the importance of early education and child care for Idaho's children and families.

Let's Move! Child Care Offers Free Trainings

To combat childhood obesity, child care providers need resources and information.
Research has shown that the rate of overweight or obese children is increasing across  the United States. Children across the county spend many hours in child care every day.

Child care providers have a unique opportunity to promote healthy lifestyle choice for young children in their care or classroom. Along with the Blue Cross of Idaho Foundation for Health and with support from Let's Move! Boise and the IdahoSTARS Project, we provided a free workshop series to child care providers in Boise, Idaho. The series is based on the First Lady's Let's Move! Child Care Initiative.

A series of three free workshops on childhood obesity, healthy nutrition, physical
activity and screen time were offered this spring in Boise. Child care providers who
completed all three sessions and the LMCC self-assessment tool received free
continuing education credits, lesson plans with sample activities geared toward LMCC,
sample policies around nutrition and physical activity that they can incorporate into
their child care settings, as well as a goody bag full of hands-on materials valued at
over $200.

We are currently working to expand the Let's Move Child Care workshop series to other parts of the state as this training was a complete success and a positive experience for all involved.

Idahoan's Generosity Makes a Big Difference

On behalf of Idaho AEYC, we would like to thank you for the amazing participation in the Week of the Young Child online auction and for the incredible donations during Idaho Gives. Idaho AEYC feels very lucky to have friends like you who support us in our efforts to advance the  field of early education in Idaho and advocate for children and families.

Generous donation help us to improve the chance of every child in Idaho to succeed through quality early learning by providing resources and information to parents, offering professional development opportunities to child care providers and early educators, and promoting the importance of quality early care and education to Idaho's communities.
