"Future" Alumna of the Month
Each month, The Skipper Report features one of our Mercy sisters as Alumna of the Month. We look to recognize alumnae who are doing exciting things, or who have made exceptional contributions to their chosen field or profession. This month, we are doing something a bit different by showcasing a future alumna. We felt Danielle's accomplishment was so significant, we had to share it. She also shows us just how awesome our future alumnae will be!
Danielle Hayes, Class of 2015
On January 18, 2013, Mercy High School San Francisco sophomore Danielle Hayes was named the California State Champion of the Voice of Democracy speech contest, sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). Danielle competed against 800 entries across the state and received a $2,000 scholarship as the first place winner.
On Sunday, March 3, The Veterans of Foreign Wars Legislative Conference in Washington, D.C. announced that Danielle was the first place winner in their 2012-2013 National Voice of Democracy Contest. At the national level, Danielle's speech was judged against 51 other entries. Danielle Hayes, sponsored by the VFW Post 1205 and Ladies Auxiliary in San Francisco, received an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. where she was presented with the T.C. Selman Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $30,000.
Danielle is the third Mercy student to be honored as first place winner of the California contest. Kristina Wong (Class of 1995) and Shelby Getsla (Class of 2010) also earned this high honor. Kristina and Shelby both went on to participate in the national competition, placing 15th and 9th, respectively.Congratulations to Danielle for this outstanding accomplishment!
And speaking of speech at Mercy, after more than 30 years of dedication to Mercy, San Francisco, speech coach and social science teacher Gail Chastain is retiring in May 2013. As well, art teacher Pauline Scott is retiring at the end of May.
There will be a send-off celebration for both Gail and Pauline on Friday, May 31, 2013. If you are interested in attending, please contact the Alumnae Relations office.

Alumnae Annual Giving
In 1963, Mercy's tuition was $300 per year. Thirty years ago, in 1983, Mercy's tuition was $2,000 annually. In 2013, tuition is $15,000 per year. As the cost of a premier education increases, Mercy continuously works to provide affordable, academic excellence to a diverse community of young women. We look to our alumnae community to help us meet the goal of ensuring a Mercy education for future Mercy girls! We challenge each alumna to give just one dollar for every year the school has been open. That's only $61! On-line giving is easy, convenient, secure and of course tax-deductible!
