Assets School Purchases

Land for New Campus

Assets School purchased its existing site, a three-and-a-half acre parcel of land at One Ohana Nui Way, from the U.S. Navy to build a new campus.  The purchase was made possible by special legislation passed by the late Senator Daniel Inouye just shortly before his death in December 2012.  Because of the legislation, Assets was offered a first right of refusal on the parcel of land that it has occupied for the last 21 years.

"The late Senator Inouye, worked tirelessly to achieve an act of congress, providing Assets and other non-profit tenants sharing property contiguous to the school a 'right of first refusal.'  We will be forever grateful for the Senator's efforts on our behalf," commented Paul Singer, Head of Assets School.  "This land purchase marks the beginning of a very exciting chapter for Assets.  With the completed purchase of our existing campus, we have secured a permanent home for our wonderful school thanks to our legendary Senator."

The $1.4 million purchase price for the property was funded primarily by endowed funds earmarked for the purchase of the land.

Group 70 International has been awarded the contract to design a new campus for the K-12 independent school.  Nordic PCL is scheduled to begin the two-year construction project in June 2015.  Construction will be done in phases so as not to disrupt the school year.  All classes will continue to run on a regular schedule during construction.

"Assets School is a critical and vital part of the educational system in Hawaii," said John Morton, Assets Board Chair.  "It provides premier educational services to students who learn differently, such as students who are gifted learners, or simply bright learners struggling in school.  Assets provides a learning environment for youngsters who faltered in typical, mainstream settings and need an alternative approach.  There is no other school like it in the State.  It's exciting to know that Assets now has a permanent home and will soon have a beautiful campus worthy of the bright, creative, and original thinkers who attend the school."

Assets School has been transforming students' lives since its inception in 1955. The vision of Assets is to create a community in which all children thrive and realize their own potential, so that society benefits from their unique talents and abilities.  Assets provides premier educational services to gifted and dyslexic children by providing model, integrated learning environments and professional outreach programs. Committed to "learning that transforms lives," Assets is guided by a mission to sustain a supportive setting for students with learning differences "that empower these children to find their place as lifelong learners in school and society."
