Greetings!

Pauloutdoor15.jpeg

While in the grocery store the other day, it occurred to me that over my lifetime, supermarkets have changed considerably.  Remember the days when you went to the grocery store and you were there only to stock your refrigerator?  Today, you can buy your groceries, make a deposit at the bank, rent a movie, purchase stamps, pick up your prescription and buy a gift card for your friend's birthday all in the same store!  As the years go by, businesses adapt to the needs of their community.  The same can be said of Assets School.  As we approach our 60th anniversary (1955-2015) it is wonderful to see how the school has adapted throughout the years to meet the needs of our unique population.  We will strive to evolve and change for the years to come in order to continue our mission of transforming lives.  Paul Singer, Head of School

ILLUMINATION
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Illumination, our annual gala, is our largest fundraiser of the year!  This year's event will be held on Friday, March 7th at the Hawaii Convention Center.   We are currently seeking volunteers to make this year's event spectacular! We know that Illumination cannot happen without active parents and grandparents!  The money raised benefits our tuition assistance program which 37% of our students receive.

WAYS TO HELP ASSETS
Support us through Foodland's Give Aloha

Foodland's Give Aloha program is one of the simplest ways to support Assets School! Simply make a donation to Assets School (organization code 77015) while shopping at Foodland, Sac N Save or Foodland Farms AND these stores will make a donation to Assets School as well!

PEOPLE THAT MAKE ASSETS WORK
Meet Peggy Brandt, Senior Counselor K-8
Meet Peggy who has worked at Assets School since 2006. She has a master's degree in counseling and guidance from University of Hawaii- Manoa and a master's degree in public health from University of California at Berkeley.

What do you value most about Assets School?

The devotion that Assets School educators have for their students is what I value most about our school. I am consistently impressed by the dedication the teachers and staff have for supporting their students. I love being a counselor here because the staff is always willing to go the extra mile when it comes to meeting student needs.

What is your goal for the current school year?

My goal is to build 21st century skills in our students by piloting Responsive Classroom (K-6) and Developmental Designs (grades 7-8) in Assets this year. These are teaching approaches that will develop our students' skills in problem solving, communication, collaboration, assertiveness, responsibility and self-control.  Few professional goals have felt so important to me as this one.

What drew you to be an educator?

I resisted the siren song of being an educator as long as I could. Nearly every member of my family is a teacher, and I swore I would not become one! In the end, however, I love to learn and I love children, so my resistance was pointless. I'm grateful that I had the chance to explore careers in public health, nutrition, and research, but ultimately I love education and feel privileged to work as an educator at Assets.

What is your book by your bedside?

Among others, I am enjoying My Own Country by Abraham Verghese and Vampires in the Lemongrove by Karen Russell.
