What do you value most about Assets School?
The devotion that Assets School educators have for their students is what I value most about our school. I am consistently impressed by the dedication the teachers and staff have for supporting their students. I love being a counselor here because the staff is always willing to go the extra mile when it comes to meeting student needs.
What is your goal for the current school year?
My goal is to build 21st century skills in our students by piloting Responsive Classroom (K-6) and Developmental Designs (grades 7-8) in Assets this year. These are teaching approaches that will develop our students' skills in problem solving, communication, collaboration, assertiveness, responsibility and self-control. Few professional goals have felt so important to me as this one.
What drew you to be an educator?
I resisted the siren song of being an educator as long as I could. Nearly every member of my family is a teacher, and I swore I would not become one! In the end, however, I love to learn and I love children, so my resistance was pointless. I'm grateful that I had the chance to explore careers in public health, nutrition, and research, but ultimately I love education and feel privileged to work as an educator at Assets.
What is your book by your bedside?
Among others, I am enjoying My Own Country by Abraham Verghese and Vampires in the Lemongrove by Karen Russell.
