Schools of the Future Conference
Three Assets teachers presented at the Schools of the Future Conference. High School English teacher Kerri Schweibert presented Poetry Fusion: The Key to 21st Century Skills. Director of Educational Technology, Mike Travis stated "Kerri did an incredible job with her presentation. She challenged the audience to come up with a sentence that would describe our own life. What words would be the meaning behind our time on this earth? Her ideas about poetry have changed my beliefs about how it can be used in high school classes, but beyond that she helped me to start thinking about how I can use well-known author Daniel Pink's ideas about story, empathy, and meaning in my own class. You can learn more about this from Daniel Pink's site with this video - http://vimeo.com/8480171. High School teacher Janice Ha commented "Wow! This "sentence" idea sounds great. Giving purpose or defining our purpose in order to make things happen." |
Campus Happenings
According to John Medina, author of the best selling book Brain Rules, exercise boosts brain power. Three Assets teachers are stimulating more exercise within the Assets community by offering morning walking sessions and afternoon yoga classes to teachers. These activities are geared towards helping faculty to stay fit and to build community. However, the benefit to the community is that participants have improved abilities to work with students because Medina notes that exercisers out perform couch potatoes in long term memory, reasoning, attention and problem solving tasks! Thank you John Medeiros, Brandon Kawazoe and Jessica Griffin!
