People Who Make Assets Work
Meet Julie Seki, our new K-8 Assistant Principal. Julie has a undergraduate degree in psychology and French and master's degree in counseling. Julie has worked at Assets for four years.
What do you value most about Assets School? Assets is a community of students, educators and families that work together to provide a positive and supportive learning environment for all types of learners. I value the education and support that this school offers to students with different learning profiles. Students are nurtured, while learning in a variety of ways that support their academic and personal growth.
What is your goal for the current school year?
Learning truly is a lifelong process--I know I will continue to grow professionally in my new role as the Assistant Principal. This year, I hope to support the students and teachers through the challenges and success that each school year brings.
What drew you to be an educator?
Even as a student, I took every opportunity to work with our keiki, whether it was through outdoor education programs, after school literacy tutoring or French language programs. I enjoyed establishing relationships with students, acting as a role model and supporting the students through personal and academic challenges. With a background in counseling, I understand that providing support to our students socially and emotionally is complementary and necessary in supporting their academic growth.
What is your book by your bedside?
I have a habit of reading several books at the same time. Although it had been sitting on my shelf for months, I just started reading In Defense of Food by Michael Pollen. I am also currently reading The First Six Weeks of School, a book about the importance of establishing a positive classroom community to set the tone for learning for the whole year. The plans and activities outlined in the book are practical, while integrating social and academic learning. When I'm feeling ambitious, I open up my German Language book.
