Quote of the Month

Another fresh new year is here

Another year to live!

To banish worry, doubt, and fear,

To love and laugh and give!

This bright new year is given me

To live each day with zest

To daily grow and try to be

My highest and my best!

I have the opportunity

Once more to right some wrongs,

To pray for peace, to plant a tree,

And sing more joyful songs!

-William Arthur Ward

People Who Make Assets Work

Meet Scott Bower, our registrar, the man behind the voice most of our parents speak with first when inquiring about Assets School. Mr. Bower, an 18 year-veteran of Assets School, manages our student database and application process.

What do you value most about Assets School?

First off, I value the way in which Assets supports students who learn differently. When I started working here in 1993, I didn't a have clue about the school. I saw a want ad in the newspaper for a database developer, data manager and desktop publisher with Macintosh computer knowledge. In my head, this position was to be a temporary job after retiring from the Navy, while I was looking for my next "real" career.

After a couple of months, I began to understand the value of Assets and the importance of supporting our students, many of whom were wounded by their experiences at other schools not equipped to work with their unique learning styles.   After six months, I tore up my resumes and told my wife that I had found my new career.

Secondly, after 18 years of employment, I continue to look forward to coming to work with a fantastic family of co-workers. To use the modern vernacular, "we got each other's back."

What is your goal for the current school year?

I have no absolute goal for the coming year but rather goals for the next few years.  I would like to obtain a new student information database solution that merges with our Development and Business Office's data.

Additionally, implementing a document digitizing and archival management system would significantly reduce the amount of physical storage space needed as well as put all our enrollment and registration documents at our fingertips.

What drew you to be an educator?

I am not an educator, but I have had some experience with teaching submarine advanced engineering courses in the Navy. My students were adults, so my hat is off to all our teachers on the front lines with our kids. Their job is much tougher than mine ever was and I'll do whatever I can to support them from my end.

What is your book by your bedside?

I love to read for my pleasure. I often read books aloud to my wife at night. Currently, I am reading Michael Connelly's "The Last Coyote," a murder mystery. Another favorite author is Jeffrey Deaver.

Campus Happenings
In the spirit of it is better to give than receive, student groups all over campus have collected items or raised money to donate to our community.  Examples include:
  • Nancy Adams' and Susannah Johnson's integrated Literature and Ethics, Philosophy, and Social Psychology classes delivered one of 10 Christmas trees paid for by an anonymous donor plus collected toiletries to a transitional housing shelter at Kalaeloa.
  • The senior class  provided gifts for the thirty students of Ka Pa'alana Traveling Preschool, which serves families at Hope Homeless Shelter in Kalaeloa (Kapolei area).
  •  K-8 Student Council members hosted a candy cane sale to raise money and awareness for Fisher House--  a home for military families of patients receiving medical care.
