People Who Make Assets Work
Meet Irma Jones (left) and Janet Marlette (right), co-chairs of Illumination: New York, New York our 2012 gala fundraiser. Together Irma and Janet ALSO serve on our Assets Parents `Ohana board where Irma is co-president and Janet is a board member. You may wonder what drives these women to volunteer their limited free time to Assets? So let us take a moment to meet these two dedicated volunteers. Irma Jones: What do you value most about Assets School? EVERYTHING! I value the fact that my son now LOVES to go to school every day, the anxiety vanished after his first day at Assets. At Assets the children are allowed to be themselves and their differences are embraced which in turn creates a feeling of safety for them since learning can only take place when kids feel safe. The teachers and staff are amazing and I appreciate their consistency, the work they do on a daily basis is miraculous and always done with kindness and in the best interest of the kids. Last year my son came to me and said that the motto "Learning that transforms lives" really is true because Assets has transformed his life, I think that says it all!
Janet Marlette What do you value most about Assets School? That's a tough question. Could it be the fact that now my son likes to come to school everyday? Or is it possibly the skill of the faculty to engage my son in a way that he actually understands the curriculum and excels at his grade level? So many things have changed for my son since he came to Assets--all of it positive. But, I think the one thing I value most is the way my son's self-esteem has changed so dramatically. He now realizes that he can be a positive contributor to a classroom, to a conversation, to a group of kids playing on the playground. I will never be able to thank Assets enough for helping my son heal which literally changed the dynamics of our family.
