Greetings!
May has arrived with its usual filled to overflowing activities and events. Here at Assets, we welcome May as a time to honor the successes of our students; commemorate our graduates; watch competitive field day events; see our students gain insight and independence in their community service and celebrate the growth that a school year can add to each student. As staff and faculty, we love to see progress and growth as we reaffirm our commitment to all the students we serve. To keep track of all the events, please see our quick list to the left.

People Who Make Assets Work
Meet Lacy Moran. Lacy has worked at Assets for three years, initially as a Development Officer and now as Director of Development. Lacy is originally from Tennessee and has ten years experience in fund development. What do you value most about Assets School? Definitely the people. I have worked at Assets for three years now and I have to say, this is the best job I have ever had. The people here are incredibly welcoming and always willing to lend a hand. The Development Office has a lot of projects throughout the year and we wouldn't be able to accomplish all that we do without the support of the office staff, faculty, trustees and most importantly our wonderful volunteers. I am always amazed at the generosity of the people connected to the school. I feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to meet so many parents and hear the stories of how they found Assets. It is easy to see why this school is so special to so many people. What is your goal for the current school year? The school year is almost over! However, we have a busy summer ahead of us. We are really trying to connect with our Alumni, which includes anyone who ever attended Assets even for a short period of time. Assets is different from other schools in that regardless of how long a student was with us, the skills he or she acquired have had a lasting effect on their learning. Wouldn't it be great if we could help our current students connect with those who have moved on and excelled in their chosen profession? We would love to be able to share the stories of our alums...the challenges encountered, the lessons learned and the successes achieved. These connections can help shape the future of our students. What drew you to be an educator? Well, I can't really call myself an educator, but I believe my efforts help support the students, families and faculty here at Assets. As Director of Development, it is my job to help the community understand what it is that Assets does and showcase the successes of our amazing students. It is also my department's responsibility to raise funds for our tuition assistance program, which is important for so many of our families. I am very fortunate to have the support of two others in my Department who are both incredibly talented and truly believe in the mission of Assets School. What is your book by your bedside? Most of the books by my bedside are children's stories. Since I have a 17-month old daughter, I spend most of my free time reading to her. The current favorites are The Runaway Bunny and The Very Hungry Caterpillar. On the professional side, I like to read The Chronicle of Philanthropy, which keeps me up to date on current fundraising trends. I am also a member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) and read their newsletters and attend local conferences.

Campus Happenings
On Thursday, April 21, the culmination of Assets 7th and 8th grade students' sustainability projects were exhibited. As part of our Middle School project based learning curriculum, students learned that sustainability encompasses environmental, social, economic and cultural issues. Students selected an area to study that resonated with them and developed initiatives to make an immediate difference in their communities. Their focus and service projects included Human Trafficking, S.M.A.S.H. (Students Mad About Sustainable Health), Local Food: Feeding Hawaii, Trash to Treasure, We Have a What Where?, Overpopulation, Homeless in Hawaii, Talking Trash, Water, Water, Everywhere, and "Girl Effect."
Other campus news includes: - The high school, lead by the Senate, hosted a Bake Sale and Penny war to raise monies for Japan Relief Efforts sponsored by the American Red Cross. Together these students raised $1,340.00 for this cause.
- Assets K-8 raised $13,078 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society through their Laps for Leukemia program. That's a lot of laps for leukemia!

Alumni Update
Where oh where in the world are the Assets Alumni? Each week, we reconnect with a few alumni who now live all over the USA. This week, we had a visit from James "JD" Merget who was an Assets student from 1977 to 1979 in the 5th and 6th grades and now lives in Brooklyn, New York! James is the owner of Oslo Coffee, a gourmet coffee company. Pictured here is James, with his Mom and our 7th and 8th grade coordinator Jane Raissle. If you are in the area, please stop by and share your news with us. We love to know details about our Assets ohana!
