As the evening drew to a close, our guests demonstrated their deep support of the Assets School program when over $50,000 was raised to support tuition assistance! What a phenomenal and inspiring pledge of support. We are moved that our community reinforces our belief that children are our greatest assets!

People Who Make Assets Work
Meet John Medeiros, Athletic Director, who has worked at Assets since 2002. Assets School annually has over 90 students involved in sports, an amazing feat for a school of 360 students with no fields of its own! Coach Medeiros actively encourages our students while organizing the athletic program to practice and compete throughout the Honolulu community. Assets athletics is another way that Assets School transforms lives. What do you value most about Assets School? Assets will always do the very best it can when it comes to supporting our students. From technology to academic coaches, to the administration helping teachers and offering support and new ideas. Everyone here works as a team, never hesitating to jump in and offer a helping hand. This is why I want to be at Assets-- for the strong sense of community and the feeling that you are helping each student find success. What is your goal for the current school year? I want these athletes to have a good experience in the sports they play. This experience will be with them for the rest of their lives, win or lose. I also want their parents to enjoy the program. Their support is important and I am grateful for their collaboration. What drew you to be an educator? I took business classes my first year in college and did not enjoy it at all. I started coaching after high school and enjoyed working with the athletes and seeing them improve. I wanted to learn more about the human body so I took a different direction. Health education gave me the tools I needed to understand the body and all aspects health. What is your book by your bedside? How do you stay current in the field? I enjoy reading the paper and finding out what is happening in the world. I stay current with articles, publications, taking classes and going to conferences. Also, I believe that interacting and developing relationships with our student athletes is key to understanding how they are feeling and doing. It is my goal to help them improve not only athletically but also to develop their character as a way help them have a more productive future.

Looking for a night on the town and a way to support Assets School? This year, the Assets 7th and 8th grade students, in small project based learning groups (PBL), have been studying sustainability. Roberta deSantis' students have made a recycled art "Soda Can" chair, which will be on display at First Friday art walks. Stop by the Ong King Art Center on 184 N.
