Greetings!
Our seasons change in Hawaii, although more subtly than on the mainland. As our days grow longer, and we drive to school and work with the sun rising, we know that we are in the spring season of our school year. For parents, this means, time to think of summer school and camp options! Please see our attached brochures under upcoming events. Assets Summer School Program is just one more reason parents love Assets School! |

Illumination, New York, New York
Our annual fundraiser, Illumination, was a great night, with great food and great aloha for Assets School. This year's theme, New York, New York resonated with our `ohana's endless belief in the possibilities for our students. To quote our event's signature song, New York, New York, made famous by Frank Sinatra, "if I can make it here, I can make it anywhere," imbues the essence of an Assets education.

We are committed to the belief that our students can make it here and make it anywhere. So be it in Hawaii or in New York, we want our students to know who they are, what they want and how to make their dreams possible.

Through the generosity of our
sponsors, supporters and guests, $104,000 was raised at the event and our call for donations raised another $60,000 for tuition assistance!
A heartfelt thank you to co-chairs Irma Jones and Janet Marlette along with over 100 volunteers who made this event possible.

TedxYouth@Punahou by Susannah Johnson
One of the gifts of living in a close community, such as Honolulu, is connectivity. And as we all know, the methods of connectivity have changed. Recently, Senior Halley Jackson and Junior Arwen Ueyoka, students in Nancy Adams and Susannah Johnson's integrated Literature & Ethics and Philosophy & Social Psychology course, were selected to present at the TedxYouth Conference at Punahou School to an audience of 100 and the world. Ted.com is an online collection of lectures given by all kinds of people on topics ranging from global warming to poetry and while each Ted Talk is not long, it is generally thought provoking and dynamic.
The theme of TedxYouth Conference was "Passion," and Halley and Arwen are passionate about disproving the stereotypes of learning differences for together, they have experienced huge changes in their academic careers by coming to Assets. They felt compelled to tell their stories in order to change other's perceptions of our students.
Halley and Arwen persevered through hours of writing their speeches, practicing and coaching. The energy at the event was excited, yet also incredibly warm and hospitable, feeling more like a neighborhood barbeque than a formal talk in the lecture hall with video cameras, lights and microphones. As each of the students spoke that day, including Assets' own, it reminded me of a truth that everyone in the Assets `ohana knows, and others in our community are seeing more and more: What is amazing is not how hard our students have it, but how utterly brilliant and capable they are when given a chance and a little support. Halley and Arwen did a fantastic job in disproving the stereotypes by proving their own greatness. And be it here in Honolulu or on the Internet, who doesn't want to connect with this type of inspiration?
We will post a link to the webcast when it becomes available.
