People Who Make Assets Work
Jyo.jpeg
Meet Jyo Bridgewater Borg who has served as K-8 principal for the last 3 years.  Jyo is a strong advocate for dyslexia education in Hawaii.
What do you value most about Assets School?

I love that, throughout its long history, Assets School has fought for students and their right to learn.  Education is a justice issue--and Assets School has been on the front lines, speaking out and advocating for families and students.
What is your goal for the current school year?
This year my focus is on building an informed community.  We're doing workshops for our own parents, and at other schools for their teachers and parents.  I'll be presenting to a college class of future educators, and I'm the HAIS representative on the legislative taskforce on dyslexia, as well as sitting on the boards of the Hawaii Council of Private Schools and the Hawaii branch of the International Dyslexia Association.  I joke that I'm appearing next at your cousin's baby luau (and I'll do it, too...with pleasure!)  We've got to keep spreading the word about sound reading instruction and the importance of reaching every student-our future depends on it.
What drew you to be an educator? It's always seemed obvious to me, even as a kid:  the world needs every voice.  If I can help facilitate that process-what a joyful gift to me!
What is the book by your bedside?
I generally read all kinds of fiction, but the book I'm most intrigued by right now is the new biography of U.S. Supreme Court Justice William Brennan, Jr.  As to keeping current in my field...I learn best through a combination of reading trusted sources and conversation with really smart people-and there is an abundance of both at Assets School!

Campus Happenings
Reginaclass42.jpeg
November is here and the daily education and activities diet continues to be rich and varied.  Pictured here are some of our youngest explorers in class 42 as they perform an experiment in gas production. How can one keep from smiling when you see kids growing, learning and exploring?

Halloween was celebrated with our annual parade in the K-8 and costume contest in the High School. Please see our Facebook page for photos.

Cheers to Keely McDonald and Rob Hutcheson's photographs who were

selected by the State of Hawai'i Creative Industries Division in conjunction with Aulani Resort to be showcased in a permanent digital image collage. See http://www.kitv.com/video/25552824/detail.html
