Greetings!

Welcome to the 2010-11 school year and 55 years of Assets School influencing education in Honolulu!

The start of the year provides the opportunity to inaugurate a new communication device, which we hope will enhance our connectivity with our community.
People Who Make Assets Work
Assets SchoolMeet Paul Singer, Head of School, who is originally from California but now makes Hawai`i his home.  Paul is a strong advocate for education and has been an educator for over thirty years.
What do you value most about Assets School?
The thing that I value most about Assets School is the strong
commitment of the faculty and administration to the students. I've never seen such a large number of people so dedicated to improving the lives of their students.
What is your goal for the current school year?
This year I would like to collaborate with our Development Office to create a solid plan for the successful implementation of a Capital Campaign.
What drew you to be an educator?
I was destined to become an educator because of my innate respect
for young people. I appreciate their challenges as well as their
awkwardness, and enjoy being a small part of their educational
journey.
What is your book by your bedside?
I am currently reading Team of Rivals, The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln by Doris Kearns Goodwin. I love to learn and read about history.  My next book is Wounded by School by Kirstin Olson.
Campus Happenings
Assets SchoolThree hundred sixty three students started school last week and our faculty and staff were overjoyed to see them!  Our classrooms and campus are now abuzz with activities as together students and teachers start their educational journeys for the year.  Here are some projects already underway:
  • In the High School, Mentorship preparation began to ready students for their sites by October 6.  This year marks the twentieth year of this unique program.
  • The 9th grade is going to Ka`ala Farms in Waianae.
  • In the K-8, a read-a-thon fundraiser in partnership with the Hawaii International Dyslexia Association will continue till September 21.
  • In the K-8, student council elections will occur on September 21.
Alumni Update
Assets SchoolAssets faculty always welcome the opportunity to have our alumni stop by to "talk story" and catch us up with the latest news.  Most recently, high school teacher Jason Wagner enjoyed a visit from Fabrizio Alliata '09, a sophomore at California's Pepperdine University.  Fabrizio, who is majoring in International Business, will be studying in London this fall as part of Pepperdine's study abroad program.  Recent graduate Isabelle Kernell '10 was along for the visit as well.   Isabelle will be starting her freshmen year at University of Hawaii in Manoa.  We wish both of these graduates well and hope to see all of our alumni at the Annual Holiday Luncheon on Friday, December 17th.  Please see our website for more details or click this link.

We hope that you have enjoyed this e-communication piece and welcome your feedback!

Aloha,
