#YALITCHAT Twisdoms
| |
Wednesday night #YALITCHAT on Twitter is a core part of what we do here at YALITCHAT. Each month in the newsletter we'll be spotlighting "twisdoms" - the best 140 character bits that our members and guests bring to our weekly Twitter chats. This month we're spotlighting our chat on giving your story personality and voice.
@zlikeinzorro Voice is unique to every writer. Try as I may, I couldn't sound like Stephen King. In that way it's inherited.
@CraigMacLachlan I love when a great voice causes a story to become alive in our minds There's no teaching voice we all have our own unique one!
@bkuhl2you I think voice might be the most important thing in a YA writer. (Maybe in all writers?)
@Adrianne_James I refuse to dumb down my characters. If I won't read it, I won't write it.
@mom2miles Voice can be coaxed as a result of deep character work. The work can be learned.
@TheMarielaO A pretty voice, makes pretty books. But I think realistically raw voices make the everlasting impressions.
@adriannems If I don't have the voice nearly figured out, I don't embark on the story. Problems with voice can kill an entire MS.
@kinksgem Reading your work out loud always helps w/ voice. Would your MC say that? Does it sound authentic?
Don't wait for April to read more Twisdoms - add your voice to the discussions, Wednesday nights at 9 pm ET!

Happy March! Not sure if the groundhog saw his shadow, but we've been having temps of 60 one week and snow or freezing rain the next! As with the weather this time of year, so too is the unpredictability of the publishing industry of late. We hope you will continue to read our newsletters (and pass them along to your writer friends whether they write YA or not), and chat with us on Twitter each Wednesday at 9pm ET using the #yalitchat hashtag. We aim to continue to support you and your writing career through these fascinating times. Buckle up, my friends; you're in for a heck of a ride.
Write well,
Georgia McBride

ZARCONIAN ISLAND
by Aja Hannah
Release date: March 28, 2013
Publisher: Curiosity Quills
My stomach knotted tighter, winding so hard it hurt.
Kate watched me, rubbing a piece of her hair between two fingers.
I bit my tongue, trying to work the words out.
"The boat ...we're going under."
Possessing powers that are feared and shunned, eighteen-year-old Alexandra "Attie" Hotep is no virgin to attacks. Her ancestors, the Zarconians-- mixed-blood inhabitants of Atlantis--were rumored to be the English fairies who kidnapped children, the Caribbean sirens that sunk ships, and the dream-like apparitions who broke into psyches. By the 1850s, they were hunted to near-extinction, leaving the existence of Atlantis and Zarconians little more than myth.
When a class trip turns deadly, Attie and her friends become stranded on an uncharted tropical island in the middle of the Pacific, and Attie finds herself targeted once more. With a jungle full of extinct and prowling animals, she struggles to find a compromise between keeping her friends safe and keeping her family's secret.
Enter Doug Hutchinson-the school's soccer star, and a handsome boy with his own secrets. But Attie and Doug soon realize the animals aren't the only threat. There is a traitor amidst the group, one that plans to turn all Zarconians into permanent myths. And Attie is next on the list.

FROM THE SUBMISSIONS MAILBOX
| |
Each month we spotlight one submission to the Submissions Mailbox. This March enjoy the first 500 words of
Mike Hay's successful submission!
About Mike: Mike Hays is a husband, father, and microbiologist from Kansas. Besides writing, he has been a football coach, a baseball coach and a sports conditioning coach. He enjoys taking the facts and fictions of our ordinary world and incorporating them into his books, blogs and social media. His debut upper middle grade historical fiction novel, THE YOUNGER DAYS, was released by the MuseItYoung imprint of MuseItUp Publishing in March of 2012 and was the recipient of a 2012 Catholic Writer's Guild Seal of Approval Award.
Title: THE BATTLE OF WONDERLAND GARDENS
Genre: MG Historical Fiction
First 500 words:
Ellis Brown parked his bike and walked up the sidewalk to the front doors of the Wonderland Gardens Retirement Community with a spring in his step. He smiled at the brilliance of his plan. A summer Saturday morning and before him was a whole retirement home of potential customers. Sweet victory would finally be his.
Ellis was basically a good kid. But, he had one big problem, an ongoing rivalry that drove him to the edge of madness. This was not a normal, run-of-the-mill rivalry, either. His rival wasn't from another town or another school, or even another team. His rival was from his own class, and it was a girl. A girl named Alicia Swanson, who had been a thorn in his side all through middle school.
She beat him out for the lead in every show and won every ribbon and every contest. Today, though, he would finally savor sweet victory. He would outsell Alicia in their summer youth theater ticket sales contest. A small victory, true, but small victories are still victories.
He had to beat Alicia at selling tickets this year. He had to win the top sales award. That was it, end of story. Fired up to finally pull off a win, Ellis practically smashed through the glass front door as he entered the Wonderland Gardens building.
The bubbly voice of an elderly woman floated across the lobby. "Oh, heavens, Mr. McGregor, we've another visitor."
The smell of old flooded his senses and brought back memories of visits with his grandpa. A smell that reminded him of how he'd watched his grandpa wither away in a place like this.
"Welcome," said a tall old man sitting beside the woman. He stood to greet Ellis. "Welcome to the Wonderland Gardens," he said. The entire lobby seemed to fall under the sweep of his long arm's motion around the room.
"Good morning," Ellis said as polite as he could despite the brewing anxiety rising in his gut at the very thought of the other "visitor" the old woman mentioned. He clenched his jaw at the memory of his most painful loss at Alicia's hand. She'd beat him out for starting quarterback in 7th grade football. Even after leading the 8th grade team to the championship as the starting quarterback last fall, his friends still gave him crap over getting beat out by a girl.
Besides, his mom would rip him a new one if she heard he was rude to old people. She was always telling him things like "It doesn't cost a thing to be polite." or "Good manners make the man." Right now, she would probably say, "Don't spread your anger like a bad cold."
"How may we help you today?" The old man tapped his forehead with his palm. "Good heavens, Mother. Where has my head gone today? Proper introductions first, Angus McGregor, then attend to the business of the day."
"Yes dear," she said. "The proper order Mr. McGregor, one must always follow the proper order."
